Baking help needed!
Hi everyone so sorry to just drop on the thread like this but I am in desperate need of some help!:o:o I’ve offered to make some cake for Thursday and need some recipe ideas. Dining table help 2Qs please
I adore my dining table - it is waxed pine so the wood is soft which means that when my DD attacked it with a pencil a couple of years ago, it has dented and marked where the pencil was... so first question is how can I get the pencil mark out, and is there anything at all I can do about the dent. If not then no bother,…

I have a friend who has grown a lot of swedes and parsnips - a field full! - and will be giving me a bag of them whenever I visit. I love swede and parsnip and have boiled and mashed or roasted them or put them in a casserole or curry before now and have a recipe for them mashed and mixed as a topping for shepherds pie. I…

Stale nuts - a warning !
I was recentkly experimenting with a new recipe for a Christmas cake (but doubtless it'll be Delia's Creole cake as usual - it's so good) and I made a lovely fruit cake from a recipe where you use a whole jar of mincemeat instead of the dried fruit. At the last minute I threw in some walnuts I found in my cupboard. The…

Has being OS made you lonely?
I still totally believe that the OS life is the right choice for me and I love planning home cooked meals, knitting and making things for the house and family - BUT - I do find it really lonely! I know there's loads of people on here with similar interests but my "real life" friends aren't OS and don't really get why I…

My heating settings
I was going to post this in the heating thread but thought it might get more responses individually. I have done everything to try and warm up my living room but for some reason it is the coldest room in the house. I have tried getting rid of all the draughts and we have put the curtains up but it is still cold. Meanwhile…

Serving meals, plated? serving bowls?
I'm interested in what others do about serving food. We like to eat together (me, OH & my elderly Dad) and now I'm back home full time (I've been working away all week) it's fairly obvious to me that OH and Dad eat too much when I put the food in serving bowls on the table (I may do as well :p ) It leaves me with a bit of…

Which vegetables don't need to be refrigerated?
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question but it seemed better than most lol... Basically, I'm doing a big shop and I'm worried about fridge space so I'm wondering which vegetables don't suffer from being kept out of the fridge?

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me with my dinner party idea? I'm doing a greek themed menu and for main i will be cooking a slow cooked beef stifado, which is basically beef stew with choped tomatoes, onions red wine vinegar, cinnamon and allspice. It tastes lovely but it looks like cat food! Does anyone…

Pickled cauliflower anyone?
Hi, I know the basics of pickling onions, and I have the vinegar & cauliflower I need, but I just wanted to know, does anyone else pickle cauliflower and if so do you salt it first as with onions or not bother? Also do you cold or hot pickle yours as there seem to be lots of recommendations for both, or even blanching the…
