My heating settings

I was going to post this in the heating thread but thought it might get more responses individually.

I have done everything to try and warm up my living room but for some reason it is the coldest room in the house. I have tried getting rid of all the draughts and we have put the curtains up but it is still cold.

Meanwhile the rest of the house is boiling!

I was wondering what you think of this? If I was to put the heating on in the living room for longer each day but close the TRV's in all the rooms that have them and then just open them up for a little while later on, would it cost my significantly more money?

At the moment we have heating on for an hour in the morning, 3 in the evening. Kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms are boiling - always too hot! Living room is freezing still! We rent at the moment but have TRV's in kitchen, living room, dining room, two bedrooms (radiators in bathroom and two hall ways without TRV's).

Are you sure the radiator in the living room is working properly? Does it need bleeding? If so it's easy to do. get a radiator key, put it in the end and turn till you get water coming out. If you hear air, that's what it is. This can make a huge difference.

Thanks In my very non-scientific way, I have felt it and it feels hot all over like the other ones so I have assumed that it doesn't need to bleeding. Maybe I should try anyway though!

Is the radiator big enough for the room? I think you need a certain size to heat a certain area.

I would do exactly what you have suggested in your first post: turn down or off all of the radiators except in the living-room. Perhaps you could take meter-readings for a day or two before you change the settings to see what the difference in consumption would be? I could be wrong but it sounds to me like the fewer radiators which are open means the less hot water you'd be pumping around the system.

We have just had oil central heating installed and its taken a few weeks for my husband to balance the radiators so that when the heating is on each individual area is at the temperature we require - Where is your thermostat on the wall - is it in the hall. I just have on without a trv and 3 is a lot! - they will get really hot when the heating is on - maybe the hall ones could be fitted with trv's to leave just the bathroom without and that way you can have the heating turned down in the hallway and up in the lounge.

As alluded to by susank, your sytem may need "balancing"

It is not a ten minute job, not is it hard, but it is tedious as it requires measuring temp in individual rooms, then closing lockshield valve until required room temp is sustained

Thanks everyone!

I live in a privately rented house and landlord is unlikely to fit anymore TRV'S. Also he fitted a new boiler before we moved in and didn't attach it to the thermostat. So that means we can measure the temperature in the kitchen (where it is) but the boiler doesn't adjust to it (if that makes sense).

I'm going to have a go at balancing temperatures and see what consumption is like for a few days. It would be nice to warm up the living room as that is where we are each evening.
