Stale nuts - a warning !

I was recentkly experimenting with a new recipe for a Christmas cake (but doubtless it'll be Delia's Creole cake as usual - it's so good) and I made a lovely fruit cake from a recipe where you use a whole jar of mincemeat instead of the dried fruit. At the last minute I threw in some walnuts I found in my cupboard. The cake was delicious except for the overwhelming taste of rancid walnuts. I didn't taste them brfore I added them to the cake mixture and they had gone really nasty and I had to chuck the cake as no one would eat it. I thought I was being thrifty, but actually it was just a big extravagance. A warning that being too 'thrifty' and hoarding things isn't always a good idea
