vegetable storage
We have started a diet (aka a healthy eating plan) hance we are buying *significantly* more fresh fruit and veg weekly. I have completely run out of space for all the fruit and veg to be stored in the fridge any longer.... Things that don't need the fridge (I haven't listed these, but include pots, onions, squash, apples,…

Quick & Cheap Vegan Sauces (Baking)
Evening all. I have just made a vegan dinner which was yummy - fried a block of tofu (cut in half) which was rubbed in ground black pepper & salt until it was golden brown all over. Served with chopped tomatoes and mushrooms which were just cooked in a lidded saucepan with a little water & basil for a while until tender. I…

Fixing free 2nd hand bike!
Hi. I've been given 2 old bikes for my sons and have spent today cleaning them up a bit. The front wheel on one is almost jammed. I have used oil but nothing seems to make a difference. I undid the nuts and washers on either side of the wheel (so I could have removed the wheel) and tightened everything back up…

Would it be offensive to take a meal to someone?
A friend with 2 young kids has got exams coming up and i thought it might be nice to pop around with a meal for them. I've only known her a few months but she's a lovely, bubbly person...i would never dream of doing it with my SIL who has OCD about food for instance but this person doesn't seem to have issues. Could it be…

Easy, cheap Vegetarian recipes?
Hello  I've been lurking around the board, and have found loads of brilliant recipes, only most of them are for meat. I don't know what to substitute other than Quorn or tofu, both of which are really bland. For some reason, whenever I try to flavour them, I manage to mess it up :( I like foods with lots of flavour,…

Thanks to the Board Guides!
Hi, I just wanted to say a quick thanks to the board guides for running this particular section so well. In particular to Pink Winged, who, without fuss always manages to find answers to pretty much anything I ever ask, from much older posts. You keep the whole place looking spick and span and in order, and it really is…

Waste not, Want not!
This is really a bump of one of my earlier replies but is specific about food; Waste not want not! If you save those stalks from broccoli, cabbage etc they make really great stir fry ingredients. The trick is to use a veg peeler and peel the stalks really thinly so they cook like chinese greens. Cheap, full of fibre and…

Home-made birthday cake
Hello I've just made this for my husband's birthday (can you tell he's a drummer) - I reckon it cost me about £8 in all, including the icing which I bought... I'm so proud - this is obviously a cheap attempt to show off my cake, thinly disguised as a moneysaving idea!!!:o

substitute for maple syrup please?
Hello, I have a biscuit recipe which requires maple syrup, which I don't have and as it's quite expensive, I don't intend getting! What could I use as an alternative? Perhaps jam or golden syrup. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!
