Would it be offensive to take a meal to someone?

A friend with 2 young kids has got exams coming up and i thought it might be nice to pop around with a meal for them. I've only known her a few months but she's a lovely, bubbly person...i would never dream of doing it with my SIL who has OCD about food for instance but this person doesn't seem to have issues.

Could it be construed as being offensive?

I once gave some extra bananas to some neighbours and although they accepted them they were a bit weird about it and I felt as if I'd put my foot in it.

In the US folk bring round meals a lot but is it acceptable in this culture?

I'd be delighted if someone brought a meal round for my family.. mind you they'd probably need a van lol..

If not cooking a meal I am certain she would love a home baked pie or cake would be lovely...

    Can you be my friend?

One of my neighbours gave me a big bag of tinned stuff he had had in the cupboard for ages and never used.. and milkshake stuff, hot chocolate.. and bread.. we got loads of bread when one of his lodgers worked for tesco and brought home all the stuff they were going to throw out.

What a sweet idea. I would be so touched if someone did that for me.

Let us now how it goes.

I think it a great idea.

I do this for my friends sometimes when they have a lot on and I've always found it appreciated.

I usually do this for people who have a new baby or have been bereaved - I usually do something that can be frozen though, in case others have done the same thing! It's a lovely idea to do for someone in the midst of exams, just as stressful as other life events as I recall

Nineteen years ago our eldest son fell and broke his neck. He died 13 days later. During those 13 days we spent most time, naturally, at the hospital. Every day, without fail, we arrived home to find a home-cooked meal on our doorstep! It wasn't, we discovered later, an organised thing - friends who didn't know each other but knew us all tought of it independently. Some donors we never did discover - but it was a wonderful lesson in true kindliness and neighbourliness for which we were truly grateful. So go for it - I'm sure it will be appreciated.

My sister in law did this for me when I'd just had my son and had been diagnosed with PND. I was so grateful. I would be very surprised if she's offended but you could always include a little card to say why you've done it.

We do it round our way all the time, mainly it is people from Church but other friends have started to do it too.

If it was me I would be very happy! Just remember to put the heating instructions in with the meal!

  • We had an elderly man that lived a few doors away from us when I was little. He had come here from ukraine, and had no family. He was housebound, and he would pass down a basket with money and a note with requests for things like butter and biscuits if you were going to the shops. My mum felt sorry for him and used to take him cooked meals regularly. I used to call him "You plenty money!", because that's what he used to shout down to people when he lowered his basket (mind you I was only 5 years old). A few days before he passed away he gave my mum a box and a note, to give to me. The box was full of old stamps and coins. It wasn't until I was older that I realised that they were gold coins. I remember he passed down some money once and insisted that my mum get me some new shoes because my old ones had opened up from the front.

Go ahead and do your good deed, and if your friend doesn't appreciate it that's her tough luck for not recognising a true friend.
