Is it worth having a second freezer
Does this sound like a good idea? I'm still at the novice stage of proper food/household budget planning, and want (need!) to get the cost down to under £200/month for 2 people, including £70 on cat food (7 cats = non-negotiable). I'm planning on getting a second cheap upright freezer purely for meat/fish/bread, doing a…

Substituting white wine
A small cooking tip I picked up from Ready Steady Cook during the week- you can subsitute apple juice [a drier one] in place of white wine in recipes. Thought that would cost the recipe cost back a bit. :snow_grin Aril

Dont send your 9 year old son to buy flour
In my wisdom (and to give DS a bit of responsibility - doh!) I asked my son to buy plain flour so I can make a malt loaf, yuck, for OH. However, he came back with wholemeal plain flour, instead of "plain" plain flour. He was delighted with himself, and I couldnt burst his bubble. So,my question is; can I use the wholemeal…

Gluten Free the old style way
I've just been advised to try a gluten free diet for a month and I'm going to try to give it a go. We don't spend too much on food shopping and I'd like to keep it that way. Fortunately we have the panasonic breadmaker so I can make gluten free bread. We also like things like quinoa so we've made a bit of a start. But does…

Mildew - tried everything!
My neighbour came back from holiday to discover her son has spilt something on her favourite table cloth, put it in the machine and left it, resulting in bad mildew stains. She's boil washed it twice to no avail. I printed out the mildew thread on here and she's tried the vinegar, soda crystals and lemon but still no luck.…

Clear Nail Varnish
I never wear nail varnish but I have a cheap (Collection 2000) bottle of clear nail varnish which can be put to lots of use. A ladder in your tights? Stop it with a dab of clear nail varnish. Buttons falling off your garments? Fix them in place with a dab of clear nail varnish on the stitches. Hair grip has a sharp edge?…

Drying jumpers flat
Now Jack Frost has moved in, my woolies are making regular appearances. Some of them say "wash as wool dry flat" and a couple are "hand washing only". I can't wring out the jumpers very much and the wool cycle spins very gently so they come out the machine very wet. I've got a couple of 'flat drying racks' from Kleeneze…

Diabetic desserts?
My MIL is diabetic - not insulin dependent, the other kind. I'd like to make a nice pudding that we all could eat, without her feeling she's spoiling it for everyone else. I can't ask her what she can and can't have as she would feel she's being a burden and would rather not have anything than cause a fuss. Any ideas? I…
