Mildew - tried everything!

Options
My neighbour came back from holiday to discover her son has spilt something on her favourite table cloth, put it in the machine and left it, resulting in bad mildew stains.

She's boil washed it twice to no avail. I printed out the mildew thread on here and she's tried the vinegar, soda crystals and lemon but still no luck.

Any ideas?

It's cotton, mostly cream but with some coloured embroidery so bleach isn't allowed.

Completely stumped now

If all else has failed, I would try fungus fighter. The stuff you use in the garden, mildew is only a fungus anyway, it's worth a go.

The only other thing I've heard of is to dab it with vodka and water, half and half. I think the alcohol is supposed to soak up the spores or something.

  • Failing that why not ask in your local drycleaners for some professional advice to see if they can suggest anything? Might be worth a try.

I've used sterilising fluid to get rid of mildew before - maybe that would help?

I had a problem (after moving a heavy piece of furniture) with a mildew stain on a carpet. I asked a professional carpet cleaner and he suggested oxy-bleach. The bleach killed the mildew spoors and didn't 'bleach' out the colour but took out the stain.

But I haven't seen this stuff for ages - the manufacturers do try to reintroduce it every so often but it obviously doesn't sell well as it isn't long before you can't find it.

If anyone does know where to get it, I'd be interested.:xmassmile

would oxy bleach be the same type of thing as ACE?

.......it could be, I've never thought about it before. I think ACE is a stain treatment to use before washing clothes. I must go and see if I can find a bottle in the supermarket to have a look at.

I was thinking of the big bottles of oxy-bleach that used to be found alongside ordinary bleach. But this might just be the same thing.

Try oxi action stain remover as a powder and leave it in a hot solution overnight then wash it again.

It has worked on some impossible stains in the past.

If that does not work see if there is a stain devil for mildew - I think it might be the same one as for grass stains.
