OS Now & Then: 2005/6
2005 vs 2006 (Old Style) New Years Eve - a time for reflection and a time for resolutions; thought it might be timely to have a "Now & Then" thread. During the course of 2005 we have had quite a number of 'newbies' to Old Style and I thought it would be interesting to reflect on how we used to do things, prior to MSE/Old…

Sewing elastic
Can anyone tell me how to sew elastic on to fabric so that when you've finished it gathers the material up? (like an elasticated waistband) I tried stretching the elastic out and then sewing it on to the fabric using straight stitch on my machine but it didn't go back to its un-stretched shape and just looked like a piece…

How long will pasta dough keep?
I've made some pasta dough out of flour and eggs, and put it in the fridge in cling-film as instructed. Is there any reason why it wouldn't keep for 24 hours?I'd like to use it tomorrow, but the recipe gives no indication of how long it can be stored for. Thanks Gills

Why didn't I think of it before?
Over Christmas I got fed up with tea, coffee etc, and started fancying something... well, even simpler, but just as warming. So I cut a thin slice of lemon, squeezed the juice in a mug but left the slice in it, and poured hot water in. Can't get simpler than that. I added a sweetener and had a wonderfully thirst-quenching…

Potato Bake
Some years ago we used to sometimes use Homepride Potato Bake, basically a jar of sauce that you pour on top of some sliced potatoes and bake in the oven. Homepride then discontinued the product. Fortunately, I then discovered that the Co-op had a similar own brand version, which had the added advantage that it was…
