Strike next week, is your school closing?
As above we have our letter that both primary and secondary schools will close next Thursday. I support the teachers decision so no major strop there but oh what a headache for childcare. Does anyone know if you are allowed unpaid leave? I know I am allowed if its an emergency but this is advance notice.

Getting my brother help
I'm new to MSE forums only posted on buying a house so far so don't know where to post this. I posted this in alcohol free diaries but not sure if that was the right place.. My brother has had a problem with drink since his teenage years (he's now 36) and lives in Spain (i.e. not near family). He's also had problems with…

Relationship with Mum
I've been lurking for a while but have finally got up the courage to post. I"m a 33 year old woman and since I was a teenager I've always had a challenging relationship with my mum. When I was young my parents divorced because my mum decided she wasn't happy anymore with her life and wanted a change. This was obviously…

BF STILL not talking to his parents! I want to help but not sure how
Its been nearly 3mths since BF had a bust up with his parents. I get on well with them but haven't seen them since the big argument. He doesn't get on too well with his mum and his dad tends to take her side but apparently this was brewing for some time and she has been emailing him couple of times as if everything is…

What baby/child stuff do you keep for your children?
I have been decluttering big style this year and I am worried I might be getting rid of too much stuff that my children would like to see in the future. Eg. first shoes and baby clothes have all been sold. I have only kept the outfit they wore home from the hospital, I have kept their wrist and ankle bands and we have…

Asking out a girl who I work with?
Hiya! Wondering if I could get some advice? I've never asked anything like this on a forum before. There is this new girl at work, she's been there about a month now. We both work in the same department and I have developed feelings for her. I think a couple of people have picked up on this as they smile when I mention her…

How often do you see members of your family?
I just wanted to post and see if I could get an idea of how often other people see various members of their family, mainly parents and grandparents. I imagine that maybe the situation is different dependent on ages, whether you have children and so on. I personally have very little time at the moment due to being in my…

Wooden train sets - Brio v others
We are planning to buy DS1 (nearly 3) a train set for Christmas, and originally wanted to get a Brio set. I still like them but have since discovered that many of the big retailers do similar versions, but much cheaper. Sainsbury's, ELC, Tesco all have them and the good thing is that they all seem compatible with each…

Free at last
I got my divorce decree absolute this week. It feels absolutely wonderful. Life is full of possibilities and I feel better than I have done for my entire adult life. I really don't know now why I put up with it for so very long. So, for those stuck in unhappy marriages, there is light at the end of the tunnel and you CAN…

Deterring cats advice please,
I have had an issue with a certain cat in my garden for a while using it as a toilet. There are cat faeces everywhere. That is bad enough, but they have now started to attack my small animals. I got there in time today before they killed a guinea pig. Does anyone have any good tried and tested tips as citrus, etc doesn't…

genealogy question
I wasn't quite sure where to post this, but I'm wondering if there are any genealogists on here who might know the answer to this. I'd like to find out a couple of things relating to my and my family's past, namely a divorce which took place in the early 1970s and some medical records from a hospital which doesn't seem to…

Advice re Power of Attorney
Not sure this is in the right place..but here goes anyway.... My uncle died a couple of years ago. My 80 year old aunt has never had to do the usual things people do regarding bills, banks, etc...normal everyday things. So her daughter looks after that, just like any caring child would do, except she is not a 'caring'…

How to turn down a date?
I need advice with wording. I've known this guy about 3 years. This morning he sent me a message on Facebook asking me out, I think he is a bit shy to ask in person. Thing is, he's a lovely guy but I am not interested in him romantically at all. What's the best way to word my reply? We belong to the same sports club so I…

Angry, upset and annoyed or over reacting rant
Just a vent really! My ds is in year 11 and today i had a call from my sons maths teacher to say how we'll he is doing :-) which is absolutely great. He is working hard and it's showing in his work and homework. Which led onto the homework conversation that they are revising for their gcse's and the past paper he bought…

Car crash
A couple of days ago, I was involved in a car accident with my daughter. Fortunately we weren't injured, although my daughter has had backache since (she has been checked at the hospital though). Now this is just a rant really, as I need to vent. I was driving down a main road. The left hand side has two lanes as you…
