  • Last year OH and I got something for each of our family members from the two of us, we didn't do any joint presents, but everyone only got smallish things as we were on such a tight budget.

If the joint present was something they would definitely both use then I would get it but if you're not sure they would I'd get them each separate presents.
  • I know that feeling, all the men in my family are impossible to buy for.

In our large extended family it goes like this. Single adults get a pressie. Attached adults get a joint pressie. Attached adults with kids don't get a pressie but their kids do instead.

Siblings buy for each other (same rules apply as above re attached and single), siblings club together to buy something really nice for their parents and parents will always buy for kids, however old they are.

Defo found this saves a massive amount of buying of tat because you feel obliged to.

My hubby and I each get presents seperately, I don't know really what anyone could get us as a couple as we're so different to buy for.

I also buy seperate presents for friends and partners and my brother and sister in law.

We all tend to buy presents for the person though, not for the house, i'm guessing that would be quite easy to buy a couple.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

Oh, I'm so glad we don't have to do this performance every year now.:)

It was totally liberating when we decided to scale down this crazy annual spendfest to virtually nothing. We don't exchange presents, and daughter will get something she has asked for, she's 24. Apart from that, a few friends get a bottle of nice wine, and the in-laws get a box of chocolates and/or a tin of biscuits. Job done.

For Christmas we buy each person individual presents and we receive a present each.

If its a joint present then it might be a bottle of wine or chocolates in addition to a present each.

For Birthdays, we send money to OH's nephews, his Sister sends him and me presents addressed from her and the children. I doubt they actually pay towards the presents. She has always addressed the presents from all of them. The nephews are both now earning their own money.

We send a present to OH's B-I-L (separated from Sister) We don't receive a present.
We send my Brother and Mum Birthday presents but only I receive one back.

It is a mine field isn't it. I never thought about it until now :rotfl:

  • Personally I would get the engaged couple an individual present......though I have to agree with the poster that says that christmas present buying has been severely reduced in the mod household.

Everyone gets a gift (bar one - but that's because I can't stand her). With the exception of her it depends on how long the couple has been together for what's spent on them.

I actually hate receiving 'couples gifts' so giving them would just be hypocritical.

These are the only people we have to buy for so it's not so bad.

Yeah you're probably right, but they will get less than a tenner each, thought £20 could get more for the money, will have to see!

Something they could use together, like cinema tickets or a meal or takeaway voucher, might go down well. Or people on the hamper thread do a "night in" hamper - that always sounds fab (wine/soft drink, dvd, popcorn, chocolate etc).
