Pregnancy - Amniocentesis

Hi

Has anybody had this procedure and is it painful?

I tried to have the CVS but it was unbearable so decided to have amnio instead!

Thanks for reading...

I had it done many years ago - baby in question is 24. I don't remember it hurting. I had a very bad cold at the time and do remember having to try not to cough as you shouldn't move.

I remember it being uncomfortable rather than painful. It does carry a (very) small chance of miscarriage after the procedure so I am assuming there is a reason for having one?

Yes there is a reason for it :) I am aware of the risks, slightly lower than for the (failed) CVS procedure.

I was told that would be uncomfortable but it was extremely painful and I had to ask the consultant to stop it!

I am just dreading it, I am hoping people will tell me its uncomfortable rather than painful but going by my experience already I am fearing the worst !

I had one too, the consultant who did it was a real b!tch which didn't help, but if you try to relax as best you can under the circumstances it's easier and quicker for them to extract the fluid and less painful for you. I was very tense and all you could see on the screen was my muscles tensing every time she tried to put the needle in. I got shouted at.

And if you don't want to know the sex of the baby remember to ask them to put the results in a sealed envelope to be kept with their records.

I've had two of these done and don't remember them being painfull at all. With my third I had the nuchal fold test done, as they were testing for Downs, which isn't an invasive procedure. the worst part of it all was waiting for the results to come through! All fine though and boys are now 18, 16 and 14. Good luck x

I have had one carried out and whilst it was frightening ( as much regards the potential results as the actual procedure) it was not painful at all.

  • I had one done in 1997 as there was a very high risk our daughter was Downs. I found it a bit painful but it was because I was tensed up and crying. It was just unexpected and they kind of threw it on us. If you relax and breath, it shouldn't hurt. It was waiting for the results that was the painful bit. Fingers crossed everything is OK x
  • Hi,

I had one too, 15 years ago, and like others have mentioned, I can't remember it being at all painful.

Take it easy for a few days afterwards though, just to be on the safe side.

    All the best x

If you can afford it there are now non invasive tests that don't have a risk of miscarriage.
