Beware costs when calling the "refer to us" 0844 insurance numbers
I used a web price comparison site. I kept getting a "You need to call us [the insurer or broker] to clarify some points" kind of message after my cheap quote. They directed me to their 0844 number. When I called it took nearly 20 minutes to do the questions and then they revised the quote upwards anyway! (I may point out…

loaded life edownment policy
Back in 1991 when my husband and I took an endownment policy to cover extra mortgage with Scottish Provident I was asked for a medical to be carried out. I wasn't in top quality health but had no life threatening health issues. My policy after the medical went from £34.06 per month to £36.54 an increase of £2.48 per month.…

Temp Car Insurance for Australians using our UK car
I can't seem to find an insurance company that will cover a couple coming over from Australia on our car insurance for a month. Does anyone know a company that does this? We've called about 7 companies so far and searched online but they all seem to say they don't cover Oz and Canada. Why is this?!!! Thanks.

British Gas/Home Insurance
Last year British gas engineer came to do power flush at parents home and by mistake he bust one of the water tank in the loft. Water caused damage to ceiling, carpet, bed, mattress and other stuff in the bedroom. Engineer asked me if I have home insurance and told me to make claim against that. I called British gas and…

Motorbike Insurance
Hey all, Well, in the spirit of moneysaving, I'm selling my BMW 3 series ('orrible beast of a car anyway) and grabbing myself a motorbike. Or probably a 125cc moped (I rather like the Vespas). CBT is finished and out of the way, so just the buying and selling left! But I know absolutely nothing about motorcycle insurance -…

How do I tell which door locks I have
I'm told I need 5 lever mortice door locks as part of my household insurance. I think I have these but there is not a BS kitemark on them. Does anyone know of any sites with pictures of the different locks on them so I can check? Also, does the absence of the kitemark mean that my insurance will be invalid? Thanks for any…

Contents insurance: Monthly payment too high?
We bought the house and took building and contents insurance for the property. Building insurance is separate and through the leaseholder, so we can't do anything about it. As for home contents insurance: monthly payments are £30 for £13,000 insured sum. Is it average or too high? We still have time to cancel it without…

Sum Assured?
Just going through a direct line quote, and its asks me for the 'sum assured'. Am I correct in saying that this should be the full amount (house purchase price) plus interest that I will owe the bank? Cheers...

Life Cover - US based policy
Hi Due to cost savings my employer (a US based company) has taken the decision to stop paying the premiums to our UK life insurance company and has added me and two other colleagues on to their US life policy. Does anyone know of any drawbacks to this? I'm already aware that they wont pay the spouse and dependant…

Please help! Partner had a motorbike accident
My partner had a motorbike accident on Wednesday evening last week on his way home from work. He was travelling down a main road at approximately 20mph and a car pulled out from a side street on the left into his path to turn right. My partner had to swerve to avoid a collision and came off his bike. He didn’t touch the…

What is best way? Travel Insurance
Later in year daughter, her husband and kids are using a chalet in Austria. They have invited wife and me along. We are both in our seventies and they in their thirties. I have had ops for early cancer and heart bypass over 5 years ago. They are arranging flights and car hire for the whole party. My question is this. Is it…

Which Home Insurance? Best on cost & service
Please would anyone be able to give me some recommendations for home (building and contents) insurance where I am happy to pay (a little!) more if the extra cost justifies the service and cover. My current Halifax insurance is coming up for renewal (this week) and due to the appalling service I have received (unhelpful,…

House contents - Legal expenses/cover
Hi, I just wondered if the legal cover would cover a problem I have just had with a neighbours decrepit fence? Basically there fence is old and is now leaning in my garden. With the recent winds we've had here, there broken fence post has hit mine and its broken 2 of my panels and done some other damage. As I've recently…

Legal and General Part VII GA
Help me with my paranoia! I have received a letter from Legal and General saying that they have had mail returned for my old address and saying that they believe I now live here (eg my present address). They are right as my home insurance is with Legal and General. In the letter it says "its important we keep in touch to…

Refused Insurance: is honesty the best policy?
Hello everyone. Last year my partner and I had life insurance refused because we admitted to past (rather mild) drug use and I admitted to an unrelated overdose (paracetamols) that was not connected to a mental health issue. Recently we contacted a IFA who has shopped around for us and we are currently waiting to hear back…

Travel Insurance
Can anyone recommend a good reasonably priced company for travel insurance? My partner broke his leg in August and had to get a permanent metal plate screwed into his leg. He is no longer receiving treatment for this although has "check-up" x-rays every 2 months. He can walk unaided. This seems to be adding a much bigger…

We all die eventually!(which assurance).
Hello again. Am I missing the point? But I thought the idea of life insurance was to provide for your dependants upon our untimely departure. Why then would I consider "critical or terminal" cover on a policy.By the nature of this type of illness then surely death would be imminent anyway and therefore it isn,t worth…

Accident Insurance for Bikers
I have for several years been paying a small monthly sum to Swinton for a policy which covers me in case of an accident. I got it when I started riding my motorbike a bit more thinking it would help the missus if I croaked whilst on the bike. But I've just noticed it doesnt cover for doing daft things like riding a bike.…
