Beware costs when calling the "refer to us" 0844 insurance numbers

I used a web price comparison site. I kept getting a "You need to call us [the insurer or broker] to clarify some points" kind of message after my cheap quote. They directed me to their 0844 number.
When I called it took nearly 20 minutes to do the questions and then they revised the quote upwards anyway! (I may point out here I got a much lower quote with a different firm in the end skipping the comparison sites.)
My BT bill shows that the 18-minute evening call cost me just under a £1.
Not a fortune, but not a welcome addition either.
Try to call these people to their normal 01 or 02 number from the SayNoTo0870 site if you don't just simply want to dump their whole quote in the bin - which is what I had to do in the end anyway because of the 25% increase once they'd taken more details from me on the phone.
