Which Home Insurance? Best on cost & service

Please would anyone be able to give me some recommendations for home (building and contents) insurance where I am happy to pay (a little!) more if the extra cost justifies the service and cover. My current Halifax insurance is coming up for renewal (this week) and due to the appalling service I have received (unhelpful, obstructive when making a claim, misleading advice, not paying out) I will not be renewing it!

    Hiscox and Chubb at the top end of the market. Excellent service but I gather Hiscox have just withdrawn their mid-net worth policy so are only doing high net worth business.

    In the middle market NFU have a good reputation as do the Co-op.

    No frills policies include Paymentshield and Tesco Value.

    Churchill, Direct Line, NU and More Than are fair to middling but I prefer to stay away from them due to their use of firms like Asprea.

    Have you had a recent claim, only if so you may not be accepted by other companies or may face a very high premium?
    The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

    I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
