Which boiler?
Hi,we have a 1980s oil fired boiler which is currently using approx 500 litres a month, which is a lot for a 3 bedroom bungalow. Obviously with increasing oil costs this is becoming increasingly expensive so we're looking at replacing it.But is there a better option than oil? We don't have main gas as we're rural. Thanks

60's water tank replacement?
The 2 bed flat I'm buying has a big, box shaped water tank. I presume it's the original! What would be a decent modern replacement. Would another water storage tank or an instant on water heater be the best or most economical option? Bearing in mind I believe there is an Economy 7 meter.

Does solar film for glass work?
I have seen cooling self adhesive films for glass or conservatory ceilings which supposedly help to cool on hot days, on amazon the reviews are hit and miss. Anyone tried this?

Looking for recommendations for cavity wall insulation
Has anybody near Ipswich got a recommendation for cavity wall insulation installers please? We may need this doing. We're replacing the 1960s tiles on our house so have to make sure we have sufficient insulation to comply with building regs. Want to avoid external and internal insulation, filling the cavity is our…

Garden help
Looking for garden tips on our newly moved into home. The garden is split into two and pictured is the second half. The two tree's are TPO on them, so they're staying, but what can I do cheaply, that could make this space not need hours of work at the weekends / get overrun. Longer-term we'd look to do something more…

Underfloor Heating 0 bar pressure
Hi, We've been building an extension with water based underfloor heating. We have two loops, one for the dining room, one for the kitchen. There's been problems with the system start to finish. We had to put in a heat exchanger to get it to work, then when it still didn't get hot much we had to change to a pressurised…

House reconfiguration help!
Hello! I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how we can rejig our upstairs layout to get master with ensuite 2 double rooms 1 single room and a family bathroom. We have just started the process of buying this house so will be sitting down with an architect in a few months but due to me obsessing over things I would…

Loft conversion, finish it or not?
Hi Should or Could I gain a Completion Certificate for various work completed in the loft, and whom should I choose, private or Council? Previously we used an architect to submit the Plan, but let the three-year start date run out before the first inspection due to funding issues. We have used the Plan, but not exactly as…

Fence dispute
Hi, I am hoping theres someone out there that has experience in dealing with a situation that we found ourselves in. We recently purchased a semi detached property, the attached house is a private rental. The previous owner of our property paid to have fencing installed around all 3 sides of the rear garden as the existing…

Rewiring a 3 bed
I've got quote anxiety. Our electrics badly need doing. They're around 60 plus years old. I'm in a 3 bed terrace and our first and only quote we've had was for 10k. I'm not asking for that much really. Hopefully some other quotes will come in cheaper. But man i thought it would be about 7k. 3 sockets per room. Spots in the…

How can I find the right replacement for dry verge units?
After the storms a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that two dry verge units were missing in the corner of the roof. I'm not sure how this happened since the house was built in 2014, is overall in good condition and everything seemed fine. I got a roofer to put two new dry verge units covering the missing ones, but the two…

Boiler constantly firing up
Our boiler is kicking in almost constantly, even when there is no demand for water/heating. Is it a 'simple' switch that has got stuck or is it likely to be a bigger issue potentially ? Obviously it's working, which is the key thing, but working too well if you like, and it can't be doing it (or our bills) any good…

Laminate Worktop…22mm v 38mm
I am trying to decide between two laminate worktops, the laminated chipboard type, not the solid ones. I prefer the 22mm one but am not sure if that will be too flimsy/hard to fit or whether I should stick with the reliable 38mm. Both have square edges if that makes a difference! Has anyone had 22mm and is it wearing well,…

Rodents Yikes!!!
Hi And thanks for reading. I have a few rats running around in my wall cavaties and in the loft. Did a search and found that people were filling up entrance points into their homes using expanding foam to prevent the rodents from entering. I did the same and it really has helped, but now they are chewing through the…

Tall hedges
My back garden faces west. Looking down the garden the neighbours to the left own the fence & it’s a hedge. They’ve only lived there a couple of years, it’s always been tall, it’s got to be between 8-9 foot. It’s about 100 foot long. As the sun is that side it casts a huge shadow over my long narrow garden for much of the…

Neighbours planning permission
Hi, I hope this is alright to post here. We have lived in our home for 12 months now, it is a detached property with a semi detached next door. Our home is built right up to the boundary we share with the home to the left. The home to the left is rented out, I have never met the owner. She has now put in planning…

Thermostats and TRVs - help! (Non smart)
I’d like to understand my heating controls better. I’ve got a thermostat in the hall and TRVs on all radiators throughout flat. I tend to have the hall thermostat at 20 (or off). If I have the TRVs in other rooms higher, ie IV or V, which would prevail? Would the rooms with those settings keep heating up, even if the main…

Fork handles? Nope, I need an 'ose
Hi all. I bought a hose with various attachments the other day and for the life of me can't figure out how to get water to flow into it. I made a video as it's easier than describing the problem. You'll see that water runs from the tap and into the attachment okay, but doesn't flow into the hose itself - it just squirts…
