Rewiring a 3 bed

I've got quote anxiety. Our electrics badly need doing. They're around 60 plus years old. I'm in a 3 bed terrace and our first and only quote we've had was for 10k. I'm not asking for that much really. Hopefully some other quotes will come in cheaper. But man i thought it would be about 7k. 3 sockets per room. Spots in the kitchen, dining room and bathroom. Pendants In the 3 bedrooms and lounge. An outside socket and porch light and a light on the top landing. Anyway good cheap thoughts my way. But does 10k sound what you'd expect? We're in Gloucestershire

  • That quote sounds heavy. If you are living there during the works it will be dearer as doing a rewire in an empty house is easier and quicker. I would have thought closer to £5k but then I've not seen the job.

My nephew worked as an electrician until quite recently.  He reckoned about £3.5k to £4k for a 2 bed terrace (his sister needed work doing after he had left his job!) so around £5k sounds nearer the mark.  Also in Gloucestershire.

Thanks so much to both of you. We won't reside in the house during the work but our furniture will. Scary times. 10k is almost what I earn in my little part time job so it did make me feel sick. We've got the money but. Yeah...

You need at least 3 double sockets in bedrooms and probably 5 in living areas and kitchen! I paid £4,200 for 3 bed rewire, including porch light and moving consumer board in 2020 (Somerset).
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

Furniture in the property will make the job more difficult as it will almost certainly need to be moved around if floorboards are lifted.  Are carpets in place as well?

Thanks. I'd love £4200 haha. We're going 3 double sockets in kitchen and a single and an isolator for the cooker on one side. And the washing machine will have an under counter plug and an isolator too. Our kitchens quite small so I think that'll be enough. We'll replace the kitchen but not for at least 18 months as we just can't afford it.

They are. The house is in quite a poor state if decor and none of them are secured at the edges. I'm happy to pay more for that aspect. Which we expected. As we would have to pay for storage if we moved everything out.

Another thing that will affect the price is the extent you want them to make good before leaving. That could include repairing the plaster where they have dug channels for wires.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Where about are you based?  I paid 4.6k for a 4 bed detached, including a mains alarm!  I would get a few more quotes! Even the specialists who said they could do it in 4 days, only wanted 5.5k (with no alarm).
