Bricks showing through old render
I have a 1930s house, which I've lived in for 2 years. It was rendered, I'm guessing at least 20 years ago. In the last few months I've noticed that in one (south east) facing wall the bricks are showing through the render (you may be able to see in the photo). This has definitely not been an issue before this year.…

A wall multi socket adapter
I saw 'this' in a magazine and now I don't know what it is called to search for one. It is an oblong adaptor to plug in to a single wall socket, then plug in about three separate appliances into it - but it was a special one: You plug it in then twist the oblong adaptor part upwards. This lets the plugs 'clear' the worktop…

Can You Make A Conservatory Work?
Hello All Despite COVID and the resultant massacre of our savings, we're still aspiring to extend our house at some point in the near future. We have a 25 year conservatory on the back which suffers all the usual problems of being too cold in winter or too hot in summer. Otherwise, its lovely and provides a lot of space…

Replacement Toilet Seat problem

Ripping out a stud wall drop ceiling
Hello all, I’m in the middle renovating my flat and would love some advise on this situation (photo). I want to take out that drop ceiling and the attached stud wall to the left. Kitchen will then be moved across the room. Just wondering if the taking down is a job that can be done DIY or do I need a professional? There’s…

Expanding foam
I noticed quite a few discussions about removing expanding foam from plastic. I've just filled some gaps with the stuff, I'm not a builder and I got it everywhere. When I looked about how to remove it I thought oops. I just let it cure and scraped it off with a ruler. It came straight off. I hope this helps someone having…

Bidet Toilet Seats
Hi, Due to disability and mobility issues, I am considering getting one of these but I know nothing about them, nor anyone who has one. Does anyone have any experience of them and can tell me - are they worth it? And what is needed from an electrical and plumbing point of view to install it? Thanks in advance.

Small Front door - what are the options?
Hi all, I've been meaning to have a new front door fitted for a while, and after finally finding a fitter and a door we liked, quarantine happened. Thankfully the fitter was able to come today and do the measuring/checking bit before we got started. The shop that would be supplying the door is still closed for the moment,…

Flies
I reckon there isn’t an answer to this but putting it out there just in case there is. It’s good weather so I am opening up my patio doors and a window or two - and in come the flies. Yesterday I had at least half a dozen. Is there any way of deterring them? I’d understand if they were coming from the front as the food…

Noise at night
Being driven slowly mad by a noise at night, any suggestions what it might be? It sounds like very light and faint windchimes. Sound is coming from the bedroom and seems to come from near the window but hard to pinpoint exactly. I live in a bungalow, and it has been really warm the past few nights so sometimes get creaking…

Restoring Parquet Flooring
Hi, I’ve recently purchased a 1910 terrace. I hoped to sand all original floorboards downstairs, however we have discovered that the edge of the hallway, living room, and dining room is lined with what I believe is parquet flooring (approx a 400mm border of parquet). The centre of the floor is original floorboards, which I…

Just wondering if anybody can help and tell me what type of mould this is please? This is a rented property and currently seeking them to sort the issue but have to wait for the Finlock gutters to be done. I don’t want to try and get rid of it if it means causing disruption to the mould and enhancing spores in the air if…

Good evening! I live in a grade 2 listed building (Stone) in Bedfordshire. And my house is in need of a lot of re-pointing work. I can not seem to get a solid answer from searching. So, do I need planning permission? and if I do. Can I carry out the work myself? Thank you:)

Gunk on tiles
We had a new sink fitted by John Wayne's grandson. Thats another story. When the old sink was removed from the wall there was a lot of residue left on the tiles. This was holding the old sink on the wall without any screws so was strong stuff. It was so strong that it held the sink on the wall on its own when the pedestal…
