Noise at night

Options
Being driven slowly mad by a noise at night, any suggestions what it might be?

It sounds like very light and faint windchimes. Sound is coming from the bedroom and seems to come from near the window but hard to pinpoint exactly. I live in a bungalow, and it has been really warm the past few nights so sometimes get creaking from the attic when it heats and cools, but that's usually just an odd noise, this goes on and on.

I've checked outside and can't hear anything. Definitely not any windchimes, and there wasn't any wind at all last night when I checked. Hum of distant traffic from main road but get that anyway and that doesn't disturb me. Nothing tapping against the roof or window.

Inside have checked a few things. Vertical blinds/ cords/ curtains all as normal. Unplugged electrical items. Noise is still there.

No idea what else to check or do, it's not a loud noise but it's constant and driving me slowly mad. I can't guarantee it wasn't there before either it's only past few nights I've noticed it.

    Get some earplugs.

  • Thanks for the suggestion. I have noticed there is a hole in the corner of the window in the sealing, where the sound does seem to be roughly coming from. Have put a bit of filler in for now to see if that works.

You'll be surprised how small a gap the air will find it's way into/through to make these sounds. Hope we might have solved the mystery; look forward to hearing any updates.
  • Sadly it didn't work but I did only fill one hole so it could be coming from elsewhere. I can only hear it from end of the window and not the other so I think you are definitely onto something, I'll get some sealant on the rest. Thanks again for suggestion.

You're welcome, hopefully you're on the right track. As it happens ours seems to need resealing again - it was awful in the really strong winds yesterday. Time to revisit and enjoy silence again. Good luck with yours!
