Re-waxing antique pine floorboards
I had reclaimed pine flooring fitted in my open plan lounge/diner last year. I finished them with Mylands wax, a long and laborious process but finish was good and worth the effort. Had some building work done this year, although the floors were protected, dust got everywhere and the floors need re-doing. What's the…

How to replace bathroom ceiling light?
In my toilet, there were 2 lights one of which is now faulty. I took the lighting unit out and it is an assembly of this model: Aurora AU-DDF124, 220V, 9W Now searching on internet, it is a very old style unit and I can't seem to find in any store (the Aurora website doesn't explain how I can buy it). Is it possible to…

Boiler firing up continuously
No heating/hot water 2 weekends ago. Fan and pcb eventually replaced and everything back to normal. Tonight I notice how hot the house feels - thought someone had changed settings but no they’re as they should be. Switched water and heating to Always Off at controls but still fires up. Turned thermostat down and have now…

Panic Stations - fridge not working two days before Christmas!
So I have literally just unpacked my huge Christmas shop, noticed the fridge was on a tad too high, went to turn it down only to accidentally turn it off (or, onto zero). There is now no power, the reassuring humming has stopped and it appears to be dead. The light hasn't worked for a while so I cannot say if it is…

Householder planning application - anybody with any experience?
Hi folks. I'm a bit hot under the collar because I've just been told by my local authority Planning Department that, yes, I probably do need a 'house holder planning approval' for a very minor piece of work. They hadn't been sure - the kind of thing I'm proposing is what has already been done up and down my estate by…

Goodwill Gesture
I paid circa £9,000 for a large national bathroom instillation company to refit my en-suite. The work was finished nearly three weeks ago now, however since then I've had no end of problems with the extractor fan. The first one worked for a few hours, then broke. They sent a new one out, which also broke after less than a…

Useless at Interior Design
Hi, Not sure what I'm hoping for but some inspiration or tips might help. We live in an ex local authority house (built just post war, I believe). We're lucky as we're a cul de sac on our own, and our houses are decent sizes. My problem is I just feel like it's like a box, with no character. And no matter how I decorate,…

Megaflo problem... and is it time for a new heating system?
Hi everyone, For the last few weeks my Megaflo water cylinder has been dripping cold water through the tundish whenever the water is heating up. I followed the instructions to recharge the air bubble, twice, but it's made no difference. I had a G3 qualified engineer come and look at it the other day who tried re-charging…

Converting garage to a home office but keeping the door - need permission?
Hi, We live in a detached house and the garage is ‘integrated’ in the house, sharing one wall with the living room and our bedroom above it. The garage has a front and a back door, two walls of concrete blocks, and one drywall towards the living room. It has a concrete floor. The house is timber framed. Recently we had an…

Concrete Garage v Brick Garage
Hello Forum, I was planning on getting a concrete garage installed and would like your advice as to whether it is worth saving more for a brick garage to add value (if it does) to our home, if we decide to move in the future. I would like the concrete garage as it gives us much needed space for gardening equipment, kids…

Indesit washer/dryer heat sensor
I have an Indesit washer dryer model number IWDD7143SUK. When I tried to do some drying today I got an F13 error code which means the dryer heat sensor has packed up. It looks as if it's quite an easy thing to replace but when I wanted to buy the part I was asked for the industrial code. I can't find this anywhere on the…

Bathroom fan extractor . Leave switch on , or not?
Howdy! An easy question really . I noticed that if I leave fan running , it switches itself off a few minutes once I’ve turned the bathroom light off. What I normally do, is turn on the switch just before I have a shower ,and turn it off when I finished my business . Is it best to carry on the same way ? Thanks :)

Cover / Servicing for and Unvented Hot Water System
Hi, We moved into a new build house just over 12 months ago and the boiler (Heat Logic 18) and unvented hot water system are due for a service. Trouble is I'm finding it really difficult to find anyone that works on these, thought an breakdown cover/service plan might be best but all the big boys (british gas, etc) don't…

Composite Front Door - they cut 20mm of the frame????
Had a new composite door fitted this week on our front door and we had two side windows fitted next to the door to the entrance to our house - got a few companies in to give a quote, used a company that had excellent reviews and a friend has recently used so come recommended - they were pleased with the company. Rogue landlord....please help
We live in a four bed detached house, costing £700 per month in rent. As that is a lot cheaper than the rental price the landlord could achieve (£1-1200) we try not to bother him much. However...... We have had numerous problems with the house. There was a leak in the toilet and although the landlord sent someone to fix…
