Just sorting out boiler cover for my Mother, shes currently on British Gas Homecare Level 4 which is everything covered including a gas check on her stove, but they charge quite a bit, is there a like for like guide floating around anywhere?

We don't have cover, never have, just save the money up that we would have spent on the cover every month and use that for any repairs we need. Luckily we know a very good heating engineer who would come out if the boiler stopped working.
In terms of an annual gas check - we get the boiler serviced annually and that costs £55Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -
We've got cover with Homeserve at the moment, but only the very basic boiler cover at £5 per month. Their package most similar to the British Gas Level 4 is from £16 per month I believe. Although they messed us around terribly the last time we had them out, it seemed to be a problem with the engineer in our area (who had only recently started working with them) rather than Homeserve themselves. We've actually had to have them out a few times and have usually been impressed.0

I've noticed that many of the companies that offer this type of cover have now decided that, like policies such as contents or car cover, you have to select an excess amount, meaning that you will in all probability still have to pay a charge for the call out if it's under the chosen excess amount. It kind of defeats the ideal of taking out these expensive policies in the first place. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -

Yes that's right. Our Homeserve excess is £95 and we've had them out three times... meaning we've STILL spent nearly £300 on the boiler despite having the cover in place
You win some and you lose some - one of the jobs would probably have cost less than the £95 to be honest, whereas the first one would have cost over £300 by itself according to the engineer. So we've still ended up getting our money's worth really. I see the £5 per month we pay for the cover as the cost of the boiler service (which is included), as I've always budgeted at £60 each year anyway.
Personally, as an anxious person I do like the certainty of knowing that my boiler repairs will never exceed £100. But then again, I'm the kind of person who jumped at the chance for a 10 year mortgage fix, which many would consider stupid! It's all down to personal choice and priorities I suppose.0
