Composite Front Door - they cut 20mm of the frame????

Had a new composite door fitted this week on our front door and we had two side windows fitted next to the door to the entrance to our house - got a few companies in to give a quote, used a company that had excellent reviews and a friend has recently used so come recommended - they were pleased with the company.

They came on Tuesday ripped out our old ali door and windows and were attempting to fit the new composite door, and we realised they had a problem - the new uvpc door frame was 20mm too big!

Theyve had to raise the door step up 20mm and they said they would either tap away a bit of the top of the door opening but were worried about plaster falling away or they would have to literally saw off 20mm from the top of the frame!!!! I said i wasnt happy with them sawing 20mm off the top of the frame.

2 seconds later they took the frame outside and sawed the top of the frame off.

Is this normal, we've ordered a bespoke door, paying good money to have it done professionally and they are chopping bits off!

Its not the fitters fault as theyve been given a job to do - i've emailed the boss who'd i've been dealing with leading up to this and am awaiting his response,

I just dont want him to fob me off saying its normal blah blah when i dont know any different,

Anybody know ? Thanks in advance

(just to add havent paid full balance yet - am awaiting the invoice)

Is the door and frame now installed and does it look OK?
  • Yes its installed - they didnt have a choice - the scrap man had already been and taken all the old stuff away ......

Yes it looks lovely to the naked eye, is it out of line with the windows on the side (half brick walls next to front door) yes, by 20mm - does it show, maybe not, but i know.

The guy has emailed me back saying these things happen and wont affect the strength of the door etc which i thought thats the response id get.

Just would like someone's opinion i suppose.

They took the easiest option. The other option may have left you with replastering, hard to match that up externally and would definitely draw the eye.

If it looks good and is installed correctly then I don't see a problem.

the problem is that the useless surveyor / window fitter measured up incorrectly so the OP got a bodge job of a door. This lets poor tradesmen carry on doing sh!te jobs and getting away with it, its not really good enough.

It was the boss who came and measured it up - side windows were 'spot on' the fitter said.

Do i kick up a fuss - what can i do, if anything about it ?

    Have you paid yet?

No, have only paid 10% deposit when we placed the order. I was expecting the final invoice to be be emailed to me, I paid deposit via bank transfer and we signed the agreement electronically (which I think is excellent way of doing it).

Should I try and request a deduction in the final payment? On what grounds should I ask for it, what’s the best terminology to use - I don’t want to say the fitters had to bodge it, but they basically did didn’t they!

They close today for the xmas period, so surprised I’ve not been chased for the money (haven’t received guarantee either yet)
  • If you hadn't seen them do it, would you know?

Possibly not no, but i did see it and you cant unsee something........as said above they've bodged it - does it make it right?

Maybe people dont watch trademen in their house, but we did, we have an open plan house so we could easily see, we wasnt standing behind them inspecting what they were doing.

I told them i did not want them to cut the top off and they turned round and done immediately that ......

No you should read it again. They had to move the door step up 20mm, but cut 20 from the top. This would say to me that something was wrong with the doorstep that it had to be moved up 20mm, meaning if it didn't have to be raised then the measuring was spot on.

So I'm a little confused now, if they didn't have to move the doorstep up then the finished height would have stayed the same as it is now.
