  • I agree with bris.
The door frame needed to be altered slightly for reasons beyond the fitters control. I wouldn't call it a bodge.

Pfft, I’ve shaved 30mm off a head and it fitted just fine. :D:D

As long as it’s all solid, fixed and sealed it’s fine. The first 10mm (ish) are just the ribs anyway.

    Hope it looks nice

  • Should I try and request a deduction in the final payment? )
Will this help you unsee the problem?

So are you saying it’s oerfectly ok to do this ? That’s what I’m asking is it ok to do this or it is a bodge?

I’m no window fitter so is this the done thing ?

No I just don’t want to be mugged off paying top dollar for a professional company to fit a door for them to bodge it - hence my originally question - is this normal to cut off door frames ?

No it is not normal, so do not pay for the work until you are satisfied with what has happened. The crux is to establish why 20mm was added at the bottom. As an example, had you specified a flush threshold but that was then causing a problem with carpet clearance?

Regardless of comments made so far, nobody should be shaving down window or door frames - the whole principle is they are made to measure. The next principle is you are paying "professionals" to measure, and order, correctly.

Look forward say five years. Your fitters may be have ceased trading. You have a problem with your door and seek manufacturers support. You tell them you watched while the frame was hacked away during fitting. The manufacturer is likely to walk away and say "you fool".

Thanks Furts - they are closed now til after xmas - i shall reply back to the email, saying we are not happy with the door being trimmed blah blah blah.

For those that think i just want to get off with paying all the remaining balance, its not about that, its about paying top money for a made to measure door being fitted and not being measured properly.

We have wooden flooring leading up the threshold - this was there when it was measured up and will remain for years to come (only fitted last year) - they've had to build up the threshold outside by 20mm - under the upvc threshold the step is painted in black doorstep paint - weve got to paint 20mm (thats now cement type mix colour) to match it in.

the surveyor has measured the dimensions of the door opening outside, and not bothered to check the internal floor level. The fitters have come to fit the door and found it will not clear the floor without lifting it 20mm thus 20mm on the step and 20mm off the top of the frame.
There is not a lot you can do apart from ask for a small reduction in the price for their cockup. The door will probably be fine but im not a UPVC expert, and cutting 20mm off the top will have definitely altered the profile of the frame, possibly affecting moisture drainage routes.

I agree with others , the reason they had to raise the sill up 20 mm/cut 20mm off the head was because the finished floor level inside was higher so the door wouldn't open.Easiest way to solve it was to cut 20mm off the head and raie the whole frame up.If theres a wide gap under the sill with plastic packers and lots of silicone then thats the reason. If its fit for purpose I don't really see a reason not to pay.

If correct then this is the fault of the person who measured up. When I measure up for a new timber door and frame I always measure the height of the existing door sill so that way I know the door and frame I make will clear the flooring.
