Building an office in the garden
Hi folks, Just wondering if anyone has any experience of building themselves a garden office? I'm toying with the idea but would need something that is suitable for year round use so I'm unsure as to whether one of the DIY shed/office flat pack things would do the job as they don't have any insulation and the wood is very…

Do I need a damp survey?
I am not sure where to go next so wondered if anybody had encountered the same problem. I bought my detached bungalow a year ago and had a homebuyers survey carried out. There were a few electrical issues highlighted which I have now sorted, but no problems regarding damp were highlighted. Since living in the property I…

Can't work out if I need planning permission...
Looking at this page, I can't understand whether I need planning permission or not... I'm thinking no as it's under 6m from the original house. North Devon Council are beyond useless at answering my question so I wondered if anyone knew :) Cheers EDIT: I know I'll need building regs :) Original Plan: Proposed plans:

Free loft insulation
I'm not on any benefits but understand I might be eligible on postcode. Plus my existing loft insulation meets the criteria in that it is barely there, roof height is adequate etc.. :D I did do a search for these postcodes and found one site which said I wasn't eligible but I've lost the link. A search has revealed various…

Can cooker extract go down instead of up?
I really need a cooker hood and extract to stop the room getting all greasy, but the cooker is on a party wall so can't go out that way, and I don't want it going right across the ceiling. There is a cellar below, so I wondered if the extract can be ducted to go down instead of up? Would that work?

Utility heating opinions
We might have time to progress the finish on our utility room over the Christmas break, so need to make some decisions now to have materials available! We have a 70mm allowance for floor finish and I'll look for some brick look tiles. This leaves us room if we want it to put underfloor heating in. We had not planned…

I have asked the question at Howdens and they said it looks better visually and that they recommend that I do but are they just saying that because of the £ ? Is it possible to have an…

Creative ideas please .... calling all wannabe Kirsty Allsops!
It's a long story but I am currently living in a flat that I've owned for a few years but have always rented out. Due to personal circumstances, I'm not sure whether I'm going to continue living there (in which case, I'll have to get a lodger) or rent it out again. Either way, the flat isn't very appealing. It doesn't feel…

Baskil Windows Review / Munster Joinery Review
I just wanted to ask if anyone else has had problems with this company? They supplied and fitted windows in a new apartment for me and I have had problems ever since. Almost every window leaks and the window sills have been damaged as well as carpets and curtains. I have an email exchange going for over a year with them…

Is this a Party Wall
I live in a linked detached house ,the garages are linked and have pitched roofs. I have received notification from the council that my neighbour wishes to extend over his garage. Would where our garage roofs join be a Party Wall?.

Cost of a lean to / pitched roof
I'm thinking of replacing an existing conservatory roof with a lean to / single pitch tiled roof. Conservatory is 4m deep (distance out from house) and 7m wide. Any rough cost guidance including plasterboard and plastering new ceiling. Thanks in advance.

GSM Intruder Alarm Sim
Hi members, I have got a intruder alarm fitted with a GSM dialer. I had a three pay as you go sim in an iPhone which I tried to use in the alarm , however it is not getting any signal. Alarm box is on the groundfloor. I have ordered pay as you go sim from Vodafone, Giffgaff and Virgin to check if the GSM dialer would get…

Building regs - will this be approved?
We're about to do some work on our house and understand that we'll need building regs to do this. Before we go down this route I'd be grateful if we could get some opinions as to whether it would be allowed at all - We have a large single storey extension spanning the back of our house that was built before we moved in. It…

Help....am I entitled to a refund
I purchase a pair of Hunter wellies for £60 on 28/10/13. Within 6 months they split on the sole and the trader replaced them for free. Now the second pair have split on the sole and the trader do not sell another wellie that is a similar look to the Hunter, or around that price. I have had to buy new wellies from a…

Installing water/WC to outbuilding
I have converted an outbuilding to a usable space. What it now lacks is heating (see my other post) and a WC/sink. I'm trying to achieve this as cheaply as possible. Happy to get my hands dirty, but also willing to pay for skills where needed. I don't really know where to start without being ripped off. I do have some…

Air source heat pump
After thinking about a wood-burning stove in an outbuilding which has been converted, I was recommended an air source heat pump as an efficient/cheaper way of heating. Has anyone got experience of these? Cost effectiveness? Installation? etc I was forwarded a link to a good brand, £400 (which is in my price range) however…

within 3m of a public sewer
Can anyone clarify what that actually means? Also are the drains on my property a public drain? The plans I have when I bought the house clearly indicate there are no public drains on my property but my soil pipe drain and rainwater channel run parallel to the back of the house I think. If they are then Thames would like a…

Help Urgent - Water Leaking Through Ceilings
Hi Wonder if anyone could advise me on best course of action here. Just got home, and noticed water had damaged the laminate flooring. On further inspection, its obvious the water is coming through 2 ceilings. I'm almost 100% sure from the neighbour above's boiler. I've tried neighbour's 3 times, and left note that they…
