Is this a Party Wall

I live in a linked detached house ,the garages are linked and have pitched roofs. I have received notification from the council that my neighbour wishes to extend over his garage. Would where our garage roofs join be a Party Wall?.

  • The wall between the two garages is likely to be and they are building on top of that

may have to demolish garage to dig proper foundations which could affect your garage. there will be disruption to you so make sure you find out what is required but please try to keep expensive surveyors out of the equation if possible. Common sense and good communication is the bets way forward.

I would not be so quick to disregard using a party wall surveyor.

The fact that the first you have heard of this is the Planning notice from the Council suggests your neighbour is not the best at communication. Why run the risk of problems which you would have to pay to resolve when a good local party wall surveyor could draw up an award for a few hundred pounds....free to you. Just make sure you avoid the expensive rip off merchants, and try to use an agreed surveyor to act for both of you to keep the costs down.

I will wait to see if planning is approved and then pop round to see him although I do feel he should be the one doing the popping round. I haven't been pestered by any surveyors touting for business yet but will avoid any that try to get me to sign up with them

    Why would you be pestered?

If he hasn't told you no doubt he wants to overlook the party wall problem.

Wonder what it will do to the price of your homes if you did the same. Is a terraced worth less than a link detached?
