Wood for bookcases
I am thinking of having two book cases built into the alcoves of my dining room so that I can use it as an office. I want open shelves at the top and cupboards at the bottom. I was inspired by Kirsty's "Fill your house for free" when someone built some book cases from reclaimed wood, and she said only the wood on show was…

Remedial action - who to ask?
The home buyers on my new flat (woo hoo, it really is mine at last) flagged up two issues 1. "the condensate drain is not properly installed. Condensing boilers discharge a steady trickle of water as well as the usual combustion gases. This is through the plastic condensate pipe. Although this water is not hot or…

Kitchen Worktops
My parents did the kitchen up cheaply around a decade ago and it's begun to fall apart a bit in places so it needs a bit of a revamp. We've always had laminate worktops and eventually water gets in somewhere and they fall apart over time so time to buy something a little better. I'm having a hard time figuring out how much…

New iron gates - paint or powder coated
I am just about to order some new iron gates for my drive. I have the option of either having them primed ready for me to undercoat and gloss or for them to come zinc galvanised and polyester powder coated. The gates cost £1100 and an extra £530 to have the powder coating. This seems a lot of extra money to me. Does anyone…

Stopcock gland nut won't screw back up spindle
My main kitchen stopcock was leaking, so I followed forum advice precisely by unscrewing the gland nut down the spindle and repacking with PTFE tape. However, when I tried to tighten it back up, I found it wouldn't screw back because the spindle was turning with it, yet the handle was stationary! I really can't fathom what…

Electrolux oven - grill not working but fan oven working
Hi all I've had a issue with my Electrolux inbuilt oven today. I was baking my pizza and the electricity tripped. I put it back on but noticed the grill was no longer working. The fan oven does work, as does the light and the fan, but not the grill. Do I need to just replace the grill element? If so, it seems attached to…

My Henry Hoover stinks!?
Had our Henry for about 2 years and the bag has been changed a couple of times since but it stinks like feet or something horrid along those lines. Is this normal? Does anyone else's Henry or Hoover smell? Other than that it's a great Hoover and still works... Just need a gas mask on

Hi all, I have a builder who will be fitting a new kitchen for me in October once the howdens rep comes round to design and price up. I know there is a sale in October. I have a few questions about Howdens though. From what I have searched on here I gather the more the builder uses howdens the bigger his account discount…

Cold water pressure too low. Please advise me.
I have a cold water storage tank in my bathroom. It is approximately 7 feet off the ground. For a bath the cold water pressure is fine. However for a shower (hose connected to taps) the cold water pressure is too low, and the cold water literately does not reach the shower output. Therefore I get only hot water from the…

Rising damp?
Hi guys. I think I have an issue. I didn't notice it before, the internal wall of our living room (underneath the bay window) has very slight light and dark patches of magnolia paint. If you look at it straight on, you won't notice it, but from the side you can. I have some pictures, but as a new user I can't post them…

Chimney breast removed - no support in loft
The chimney breast at the rear of my house has been removed for some time, probably over 30 years ago. After some investigating today up in the loft, it doesn't seem to be supported as the chimney is still running down to the ceiling of the back bedroom. After removing some boards that were blocking up a void in the airing…

Booking a boiler service
Hello I want to book a service for our Worcester boiler (I've been bad not serviced it since we moved I'm 4 years ago!). British gas are doing an offer of £49.99 for a service but when you look at what's involved it's just visual checks. Seems a bit of a rip off to me but is it just this type of service that's needed? Is…

washing line - problems with the line coming off the pully, any ideas???
hello all. I have a first floor flat, and lucky enough to also have my own private garden. I have a pole at the end of the garden, and I have a pully wheel attached to the pole, and one attached to the outside brick work. A simple process of pulling and pushing allows the washing to be hung out to dry. A lot of the time,…

New Kitchen Nightmare
Having been around 4 kitchen places today, I have realised what a minefield this is. Been in Kutchenhaus, Better Living, Wren and a local one called Fineline. We have sort of come up with what we want, and whilst in Wren, agreed too have someone call around for the measuring service. However, having a look online, it looks…
