New iron gates - paint or powder coated

I am just about to order some new iron gates for my drive. I have the option of either having them primed ready for me to undercoat and gloss or for them to come zinc galvanised and polyester powder coated. The gates cost £1100 and an extra £530 to have the powder coating. This seems a lot of extra money to me. Does anyone think it is worth spending this extra money or just paint them every couple of years?

That does seem a lot? Wouldn't pay it personally. Even if you paint them yourself, with the right product, you should go more than a couple of years between re-painting.

    I'd certainly have them galvanised.
There are paints today that can be used over galv.

Powder coating? I'd check out the price of galv only before you decide;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

We had iron driveway gates fitted about twelve years ago, we had them galvanised and they look as good as new.

We are just in the process now of getting a side gate replaced as well and the (same) supplier said that he will now only supply galvanised gates.

Cost of a six foot high by 3 foot wide gate galvanised and painted including fitting is £350.

100% galvanise wont rust then.....less maitnence way is to powder coat but if you dont mind repainting them every couple years just have them painted...£530 for powder coat is a laugh would look elsewhere..all the best and goodluck

The £530 was for two 2m * 900mm gates, two 1.5m * 900mm railings, one 1.3m * 900mm gate and two 100mm posts. It was to zinc galvanize and powder coat.

I have today phoned around to get a price and the galvanazing came out to £360 and the powder coating came to £387 so £530 seems a good price.

I was assuming that price was to galv and powder coat.

I'd still go with the galv only option, dependant on size it seems fair.
Powder coating is variable, I've had tubular race car chassis done in it and it just din't last.

I think there is only 1 no no, don't powder coat only

I guess you really mean steel gates? Iron would need different treatment.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !
  • Another vote for galvanised.....Powder coating needs to be done carefully, if not it can chip/crack and allow water ingress.

So what you're saying is your original post was misleading in that the £530 wasn't just for 2 gates.... all the other stuff makes quite a difference to what you had originally asked.....
