Waterproofing shower ceiling
Hi there We're putting a shower into our new loft conversion. It has a low sloping ceiling so I was thinking it might be a good idea to waterproof the ceiling somehow. I was thinking of some sort of thin PVC sheeting. Can anyone suggest something suitable? I'm also likely to need a made to measure cubicle as the roof…

new shed roof
My shed needs a new roof, it has at the moment a tongue and grove wooden roof covered with bitumen roofing felt. Would MDF flooring covered with roofing felt be suitable or should I use corrugated roofing sheets similar to http://www.wickes.co.uk/Black-Corrugated-Bitumen-Sheet-950x2000mm/p/240039 and do away with the wood?…

We have an alleyway behind our back garden that is on our deeds and our next door neighbour has "right of access" to get to his back garden through For 6 years, no problem whatsoever The last few weeks, for whatever reason, he's started storing his bins in the alleyway, right next to our back gate. Regardless of the smell…

A little plumbing help required (pic)
Hi all, My cistern is overfilling and leaking into the bowl. My guess is that some grit is in the valve and I want to clean up the seal - I don't want to force it - how do I unscrew it: Any other educated guesses as to why it is overflowing are gratefully received! How do I get the siphon out to check - twist it?

How do I sue a rogue trader?
I paid a chap £1000 deposit in April to lay a new drive for me, with a balance of £1200 to be paid on completion. Although he's done quite a lot of the work, he hasn't been near the pace for the last month, and I'm sick of texting and ringing, with him promising to turn up and then never does. i also paid him £500 to turf…

UPDATED THREAD New bathroom layout advice please
Thank you for all the great advice and cause for thought lots of you have given me since I posted this thread a few weeks ago. Unfortunately it looks as if my bathroom fitting will have to be delayed as my fitter is unwell. Since I last posted I've had a rethink about the freestanding bath I'd set my heart on, having…

Damp plaster on internal wall 1m above DPC
Hi, I'd be grateful for some advice please. We have a huge damp area of plaster on the dividing wall between us and next door (1920s semi, solid walls). The first signs appeared through the vinyl wallpaper, small rust-like marks 2 years ago followed by the wallpaper starting to lift off the wall. It is a large kitchen…

Decking joist spacing?
I'm trying to build a small deck as a DIY project. I was following a plan in a book but realized that it isn't incredibly specific in all the stages for things like joists and support beams. It has diagrams but no measurements. The bulk of the frame is made from 76x48mm wood and support beams that are 75x75mm. It's…

I was upstairs in the spare room recently, where OH has his desk and usually, the blind down and I noticed the bottom right hand corner of the (Victorian) sash window was badly in need of repainting. problem with zanussi tumble drier
My Zanusssi condenser tumble-dryer is playing up at the moment, and I'm wondering if it's fixable (by me), or if I'll need to pay for someone to come out.. It's just a basic dryer, with a timer setting and a fabrics setting (cottons/synthetics) Usually the tumble dryer does its cycle, then the 'end' light shows and it…

Vision Blinds
Hi all, My OH has seen some of these 'Vision Blinds' she would like to get. We had a quote from a local company, but it was well out of our budget. Hi, thanks in advance for any help. We moved in to this house 6 years ago and the kitchen had been recently redone including a dishwasher. The dishwasher has now broken and I called out a repair man to have a look (I think the heater has gone). When he removed the kick board we found that the floor had been tiled after the…
