Air Vents in Bedrooms

Hi All,

I have very old style wooden air vents in the bedrooms which are built into wall now is it better to block the airs vents off completely or replace them with new ones.

I am hoping I can chisel them off looks easy enough.

Why are they there? To prevent damp, or maybe because there's a gas fire in the room? I would think carefully about potential problems before blocking them up.

If you have a gas appliance that isn't room sealed then you need these vents, if not you could end up killing yourself.

My house had these in every bedroom because the was a fireplace in each room.
If you have no gas fire or fireplace that you use I would block them up or remove them.
I would be very careful how you remove them though.....don't go hammering & banging at the job or you will have all the plaster off the walls !!!

Thanks for the replies, I have no gas fires in either of the bedrooms, I have a gas boiler in the bathroom which has an air vent but I will not be touching it.

I am having all the bedrooms re skimmed/plastered hence why I am thinking to block the vents up before I get the plastering done.

Dont block them!!!!, this is for air circulation, Block them up and you will start to get black mold on the walls ect, you shouldn't have a gas fire in the bedroom as it is against the law to do so.
