Would you get a custom size bed?
We want a king-size bed (150cm wide) but not the standard 200cm length due to restricted space in bedroom - we need it to be 190cm, which is the standard length of singles and doubles. We are both 5'6-7" so I think that bed length will be fine even if we are stretched out. Bentalls department store in Kingston upon Thames…

Planning appeals for Newbies
Has anyone been through the planning appeals process. I know nothing about it. I guess I need a planning consultant but how much does it cost, how long does it take, can the disgruntled neighbours get involved and run up costs that I might end up having to pay? Any advice gratefully accepted.

Price of a new window
Hi I have one window that is in serious need of replacement. Double glazed upvc but haven't decided on openings as yet, it's about 88cm x 90cm (yes I know I'll need to be more precise than that!) Is it possible to get a rough idea of price? I'd like to be able to get hubby on side before contacting window companies. Are…

Wickes bathroom installation - any good?
I have just ordered a new bathroom in the Wickes sale - great price and some good discounts on the products. They are also offering 20% off Wickes installation, bringing the total cost for 'dry' installation to £1900 (for a bath with shower over, built-in sink, back-to-wall built-in loo, and 2 separate cabinets). The…

Worcester 12Ri, Remeha Avanta 12V or other conventional boiler?
Hi all, we're getting quotes for replacing our Baxi Bermuda SL3 backboiler to see how much we need to save up for replacement before the next heating system. We have a vented, pumped system and were looking for a replacement conventional boiler. http://www.idhee.org.uk/boilersize.php gives a boiler output requirement of…

How many square metres of carpet do I need?
I'm thinking of buying some carpet online as I've seen a couple of matching end rolls of a quality carpet that I like, but want to be sure I'd be buying enough to cover the whole area I want carpeted. So I wonder if somebody here would be good enough to let me know the minimum square metres I need to buy. I make it around…

Are we even trying the right trade for installing a sump pump?
"still not got that sorted" you ask - no. Tried one builder guy who said he could do it & would quote us the following week. He never got back as promised. He was a joker anyway & even if he had got back he most certainly wouldn't have got the job. Tried another who wouldn't do it. Tried another - said he was too busy but…

Tarpaulin or vinyl canvas cover?
Hi all, I've had bad experiences with cheap tarpaulins from B&M in the past, which claim to be tear and rot resistant, but around 4 out of 5 that I have purchased have either rotted away or most often torn by the time I have tied them down (...if not before)! I am currently looking for a good quality heavy-duty cover for…

Wind bar for 3m x 6m marquee?
Hi all, Am planning to purchase a 3m x 6m pop-up marquee and notice that you can buy wind bars......only thing is they all seem to be for 2.5m x 2.5m or 3m x 3m marquees. I presume I could just purchase 2 of the wind bars for the 3m x 3m marquee and put one in either half of the 3m x 6m marquee that I purchase? Thanks in…

Electric shower vs immersion mixer in economy 7 flat
Hi all. I have been given a free electric shower by a friend. A triton t70 gsi. It's an 8.5kw shower. Currently we run economy 7 and the immersion is timed to come on for an hour during the off peak time. This gives us enough hot water for 2x 10-minute showers each morning. We currently have a mixer shower. On the cost…
