We have a large loft space which is currently very simple - a ladder…

Underlay delivered wet -can it be saved?
Ordered 30sqm of pu underlay from tradepriced this week. When it arrived there were a couple of holes in the packaging and the tops were open. New plaster coming off on screw heads in loft extention
Hello, bit of advice if anyone has anything helpful to offer please..... Had a loft extension finished a couple of months ago - it all went ok, a few issues, but nothing you wouldn't expect, and maintained a decent relationship with the joiner. We agreed a contract, and as part of that there were payment dates - the final…

Project: Insulate House - draughts
Hi All Our hallway has been a very cold room of late so I thought I would have a look under the stairs to see whether anything in there was contributing to the problem. How much to fit an external door and frame?
After years of dithering about replacing my front door and with what, I am ready to push the button and use the hardwood door that has lain against the wall in my spare room for years (it's been held tight up against it, not at an angle, so hopefully it hasn't warped) The frame needs replacing as well as the small window…

Fitting a five bar gate
Hi, Can anyone advise how difficult it is to hang a far bar gate with only one person? I plan to fit two gates (one 9 ft, one 4 ft) to close a 13 ft entrance. The price I've had to fit them to existing posts is around £500 plus the gates. I'm firmly handy at DIY but would like to hear any opinions if this is likely to be…

Hard black substance found behind bump in plastered wall
I am preparing a wall for redecoration and in the process chipped away at a bump in the wall about a couple of inches across. I exposed a black rock like substance the size of a coin. This is surely the cause of the swollen plaster. Does anyone know what it is or what it might be and how best to deal with it? The property…

Restoring old wood furniture
I'm looking around at furniture, and as I like solid wood, but antiques are a bit pricey, and not really my style, I'm looking at furniture from the last century, in particular Ercol. Does anyone know the kind of varnish used? I'm assuming polyurethane or similar rather than shellac. And how do you 'revive' an old table?…
