Replacing kitchen doors - hinge height
We are expecting a delivery of high gloss cream Cooke and Lewis door, cab and draw fronts to turn up soon. Is it ok to drill new holes in the carcass if the pre drilled hinge seating in the doors doesn't line up with our already attached hinges? Is this common and easy to rectify? Seemed like a waste to pay for new…

Paint colour
Giving the spare bedroom a bit of a spruce up and want a neutral, light and airy look, so magnolia was my first thought. I know this is the 'colour of choice' on programmes like Homes Under The Hammer and I do agree it looks nice and clean but I fancy something a bit different but with the same look, if you know what I…

How to make metal draw runners move freely?
Hi all, I have a rather nice sold wood wardrobe which has two draws with metal runners. Once upon a time these runners had ballbearings in which are long gone. As such it is stiff to pull the draws open and push close. I put some GT85 (similar to WD40) on them and this made them move much more easily. Can anyone suggust a…

Just bought an old looking freezer, too expensive to run?
Not sure if this was a mistake or not but it looks fairly old and not im thinking its going to cost too much to run! It is a freestanding freezer and about 5ft tall, inside there is a label that says it uses 220-240v, 1.2 amp and underneath it says the nominal input is 167w, is this going to cost a lot? I rang the person…

Son's noisy bedroom
Hi, can I seek advice please. We live in a paper thin end terrace. As my (now 15) year old son gets older he is getting noisier in his day to day activities. He was upstairs with a pal on Saturday on the computer and I was downstairs reading. I could hear every swear word he uttered  Also, our two bedrooms join with a…

Discounts and haggling with retailers - carpet right/Storeys.
A lot of years ago, when I bought my first house, I remember accepting the first price I was quoted for everything. It was simple cheap stuff, so I imagine the mark ups were far less, but still, I think back to the money I could have saved. With years and experience, I'll always haggle for things - politely and lightly for…

Sticking 2 tiles on plasterboard
My sons both decorated tiles at a workshop in the summer holidays. The tiles have just come through the post (had to leave them to be fired) and I need to know how to attach them to the wall! They are about 6 x 6 inches and I'm worried they might be too heavy for ordinary superglue. Please can someone recommend something…

Washer Dryer problems
Hello, My washing machine was plumbed in yesterday, it hasn't been connected for around 6 weeks but it worked fine before this. It stopped part way through a cycle with water still in it. It doesn't have a drain button so I had to manually empty it. I checked the filter and it had a few coins and some fluff in it so I…
