Killing a tree
I removed a tree yesterday, cut it at the bottom, leaving a stump about 6 inches high. It wasn't a very big tree, the stump is the diameter of a Coke bottle. I drilled some holes in the stump, then poured some turps into the holes. Do you think this will kill it forever? Thanks

Electric central heating - any suggestions/ideas/recommendations?
I am tired at the hassle and expense of obtaining gas safety certificates for a property I own. In any case, the property is an older one and I suspect that gas is not the safest thing to have there, safety certs or not. Also, it does not have a CH system at the moment and I have promised to install this by the winter. I…

Garden shed
Can anyone give me a rough idea of a price for installation of a garden shed please. We're thinking of buying something in the region of 10 x 6, possibly a bit bigger, but it would be on grass so would need a proper base and surround, as well as setting up the actual shed itself. It needs to be solid and long lasting and…

Gas Boiler Problems?!
I don't know whether anyone can help, but here goes! I rent a house with has a gas boiler (i don't know whether its a combi or something else) We think it's about 11 years old. Since the end of winter, it seems to 'mis-fire'. We only ever switch the boiler 'on' to heat water to wash up, so every 3 or 4 days. When we do,…

double glazed units
Hi I have read a few old posts about double glazing and there seems to some proffesionals in the field who post here. I am looking for an approximate price, or an idea of a price for 14mm argon filled D/G units, supply only. I suppose price per meter squared would be great.

Shower thermostat not working - new part or new shower?
Hi, we have a Aqualisa thermostatic mixer shower with a combi boiler in our new house. The shower temperature varies hot/cold all the time. It is not related to other people using water in the house and the water pressure remains constant. Our electrician advised us that it's a simple job to change the thermostatic part of…

Black gunk in loo and from upstairs cold taps
On and off we get dark gunk which sticks to the sides of the loos - it comes back after a few days even though we've really scrubbed and bleached them. Also, we have had a couple of occasions where some dark gunk has dripped from a cold tap - one not used for a while. Do we need to get a tank flushed or treated do you…

DFS: any one bought the Supreme reclining Sofa?
I was in DFS today looking at it, and trying to decide. Most sales tend to be well reduced, but this is only by £100. They say it doesn't need the 'leather protection' because it is so good that anything that gets put on it, comes off easy. So just wondering what they are like at aftersales, if you have problems, and the…

Fence
What is the best way to find out which fence is yours in the back garden, as before we moved in the owner put a new fence on the right side. The owner on the left side first mentioned about the fence when we moved in that she was thinking of changing the fence as it has seen better days. I will have to find the deeds just…

cooker extraction hood
Hi, Another kitchen question!! :o We were planning on keeping our current extractor (which I think is a MFI make-approx 10 years old) But it is very noisy. And although it seems powerful if you stand outside by the vent, there is still a lot of steam when you are using it. So I was wondering if anyone can recommend a 60 cm…
