DIY loft insulation - what to buy and where to buy it?
I'm keen to insulate my loft myself. I investigated having it done by British Gas on one of the grant schemes, but they would only insulate using sprayed in insulation which meant I wouldn't be able to have any storage space in the loft (and also raised concerns to me about how easy it would be to remove if we wanted to…

Helllllppppppp.... I am in the process of doing a few jobs on my new house and the next stage is to buy the engineered wooden flooring. Removing bottle trap from sink
I've got a slow-draining sink. Last time this happened, a plumber came round and removed the bottle trap to clear it out, so I'm quite sure this is what needs doing again but it looked simple enough to do myself. However... I can't get the bottle trap off. I've taken a picture of it: Am I right in thinking that the part I…

We're having a new kitchen installed and need the full set of appliances (built-in oven and hob, freestanding fridge-freezer, and washing machine), and have no idea what brands are good quality and value. Kitchen Tiles cement coming apart...
Hi all, I have never done any DIY in my life before but going to make a start with my kitchen floor. The one that is there is really annoying in that the grout in between the tiles are coming away so bad that there is hardly anything left and crumbs etc always get stuck. I would like to attempt to redo it...the tiles…

Cost of an extension
Hi, We are looking to buy a house and would want to add a single storey extension to the rear. We have no idea how much an extension would cost though. Depending upon the cost we would either just extend behind one room of the house (e.g. a garden room of 10 ft x 7 ft) or perhaps extend behind the whole length of the house…

Bedroom decor - is it ok to mix white and cream?
Earlier this year I purchased a new bed and new bed linen to go with it. Well having lived with the linen for a few months I've now decided that, beautiful though it is, it is far too stuffy for me so I've bought a very simple but classic white set. My question - would it look ok to have white bedlinen with cream damask…

How do I get the work finished?
We had an extension built last year. The job started well, but ended frustratingly mainly due to the electrician subcontracted who did everything terribly and was shockingly behaved. Now we love the extension, but these unfinished jobs are nagging away at me (and so is the Mrs) At the end (last June) the job was finished…

Screws keep working loose
Hi I have an mdf door under the stairs but some of the screws keep working loose on account of the flimsy ornate hinges (don't want to replace them.) I'm told that there is a resin(?) that you can screw into when set. My plan is to drill two holes where the screws enter the edge of the door and them fill them with this…

This is a building related question. I have searched the VAT web site and they say that if two walls of an old building are retained due to planning consent then VAT may be Zero rated on building works of a new house. Is this only if you are a business or a contractor? Can I reclaim VAT on the following works? To explain:…
