calor gas fire for over the winter

i have gas central heating that runs off a combi boiler, I am considering buying a calor gas fire as an extra source of heat in the sitting room over the winter

I do have a gas fire in there already but dont use it much as have been told it is expensive to run, it is a living flame fire.

Does anyone have a calor gas fire, what do you think of them?

Does the gas bottle last a while, or are they expensive to run?

thanks

bulk lpg ..the stuff deliverd by a tanker is twice the price of natrural gas ..think bottled lpg is even more....
they sell bottled gas by the kilogram
just been looking around the net ..

    results
your gas bottle heater takes 15 kg bottles i think ..cant find any pricing for these ..but larger bottles are 47kg

There are 91 ltrs in a 47kg bottle...a 47kg bottle is around £45 (lowest) but can be as much as £80, so price per litre is between 50 pence and 80 pence a litre

so just the 47 kg bottled gas is 2 times the price of natural gas at lowest 50 pence per litre..your 15 kg will be even more per litre

here's a recent thread on bottled gas prices

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3020776

here's an energy price comparison site

    http://www.biomassenergycentre.org.uk/portal/page?_pageid=75,59188&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

to sum it up ..you're going to be paying twice as much or more for bottled gas for the given heat you get from it .
and the room must be vented...so you loose out on efficiency there.

not recommended,,because of the C0..but you could leave your burners on the cooker going flat out ..would be close to 100 percent efficient...doing the same as a bottle heater..for half the price ..and more efficient than a boiler....but again you would have to vent the room

    all the best.markj

to make it a bit simpler,
bottled gas is more expensive to run than your normal gas supply, also the big drawback is for every bottle you use you put apx 20litres of water into the local atmosphere

If the room isn't warm enough it would suggest there are issues with your heating. It may be a simple as an undersized radiator. Why don't you sort this out instead of buying a "bomb on wheels"? Cheaper to buy and cheaper to run...... and safer.....

You can get a Valor Firelite Radiant Outset Gas Fire for £170 (plus fitting, of course). So maybe twice the price of a portable cabinet gas heater which costs about £100. Plus you may have to pay a deposit on the bottle. Calor charge £30 deposit and £32 for a refill, so that's over £60 to fork out up front.

However mains gas will be a fraction of the cost and your walls won't be running with condensation.

I used a Calor portable fire last winter (actually made by Remington, but they are similar), instead of my storage heater, as I had got fed up with paying a fortune in electric, for a heater that was cold by the time I got home at night.
I found it pretty good. Using all three bars it heated up the whole bungalow (it is quite small) in ten minutes, I would then turn it down to one bar for about twenty minutes. The room would then be warm and toasty for ages.
I used three and a bit cylinders over the winter, at around £30 each.
Condensation wasn't a problem, but I did notice a very slight gas smell occasionally.
It was very good in the mornings, when you just need a quick blast of heat at breakfast.
You should note that I work outside and find most peoples houses very hot and stuffy in the winter, so depending on your lifestyle you may use more gas.

i just wanted it to put on along with the heating to warm the house up quicker

Last year was freezing and even with the heating coming on before I got in from work i thought the room was cold, if the gas fire costs less I will just put that on for a blast of heat

I dont think the house is cold really, I am the only one that is cold but I do feel the cold badly and when I get cold find it really hard to get warm again

I think the rooms got so cold duing the day that it just took a lot to heat them back up to a decent temperature again
