Sofa.com
Has anyone bought a sofa from sofa.com? I've been looking at a modular sofa but it states in their T&Cs that if I don't like it, I can't return it and their showroom is in London - quite a distance from me! I have a swatch of fabric but I'm still a little nervous about going ahead with such a large purchase without being…

do I need hardcore or not?
We have just had our old path taken up. Unfortunately, it had been broken by tree roots over time with the tiling twisted. The builders have cleared the roots and said that the old path appeared to have alot of sand and only 1 inch of cement making it weak. They propose to put down a 4 inch cement base to tile on without…

Conservatory versus Extension
Obviously a brick built extension is more durable but also a lot more costly. Daughter is undecided which way to go. What would be considered the life of a conservatory which would be used as dinning room on the back of the house. The proposed extention doesn't come cheap, the price quoted is £25,000. Any thoughts anyone?

Hanging canvas on wall - 3M Command strips?
Hi there, We recently bought 3 canvases (20" x 32" each) and we not sure what would be the best way to hang them on the wall. As daft as it sounds, neither of us have hung pictures on a wall before, so we have no idea about drilling holes in the wall the right way (or wrong way) and besides we want to hang up quite a few…

Heating system- clueless!
Hi all, I have just moved into my new house and am trying to fathom the whole heating/ water system. My DH is working away at the moment (great timing!) and so lots of things are being left to me to sort out... I called British Gas to get an idea of how much it would cost to cover our boiler- they asked me loads of…

Electric screwdriver for unscrewing
I've got a cheap bed with slats and each slat is screwed to the wood support. I need an electric screwdriver to unscrew them (can't face doing the job manually) but don't know what power level I would need. I'm not a DIY person so I don't see myself using it very often. I looked at hiring one but they wanted £16 for one…

Perils of using a builder to fit a kitchen?
I need to order our new kitchen from a particular company, because it's the only one that can supply the exact colour we want. (The doors are coloured at the time of manufacture, which means that they're much more durable than ones that have been spraypainted afterwards.) But we've not been particularly impressed with…

Anyone used energy saving radiator valves?
I am a frustrated DIYer, who would like to DIY zone my heating to give me room control, save energy and reduce my bills! I have seen products from Pegler called i-temp and also one called eTRV. Has anyone any experience of these products? It looks like you remove the existing TRV and simply replace, with no need for a…

Urgent bricklaying/wall advice needed please
Next door have had a new wall built, and in doing so they had to knock down the short shared walls between the properys (about 4 foot long, with a column on each side) when building the new one, they have not connected the wall in any way to the coloumn (no cement or wall ties, just a 2 - 3 cm gap) they said this is the…

My bathroom wall has stretchmarks?
Yes, it looks like proper stretchmarks you'd get on your body! :rotfl: Could it be the paint? It's only on the one wall which is the wall against the bath/shower. We only moved here in March and just gave the bathroom a damn good clean (it had not long been painted anyway) but it's getting worse now so I'm hoping when we…

Air bubbles in wallpaint after 2 months of moving in

mains water pressure to high for boiler?
I have recently had a Worcester combi bolier fitted and in the last few days it has started to randomly leak water. It seems to be coming from fairly high up inside the boiler and runs down various pipes before dripping from a couple of places at the bottom. The pressure IN the boiler is fine, around 1 bar, and the boiler…

Electricity sockets in contact with water
We are renting a property in England and have had a problem with our fridge stopping working. We found the plug eventually and it was under the sink connected via a surge protector plug to the socket. The plug has been damaged because the sink leaked and the landlord will send an electrician around to fix it tomorrow. They…

30 degree wash that may be hotter!
Has anyone else got a suspicion that their 30 degree wash is washing hotter? I have had a succession of garments coming out of the wash definitely smaller than when they went in even though washing instructions clearly say 30 degrees. Not sure whether to spend money calling in an engineer.
