Plastering on Celcon Blocks
Hi, We have just had an extension built and I am looking for a Plasterer. The Plastering will be done on 100mm Celcon Blocks and was wondering what is the usual Sand and Cement or Hardwall ? I have had a couple of quotes in already, one £650 and one £950. £950 was for the sand and cement. Both plasterers are advising…

Cold Radiator
Hi folks - hoping somone can give me a bit of advise. Our heating and hot water (gas) went kaput at the weekend. I had someone come out today to fix the problem - which turned out to be a jammed circulator. In order to do this he had to drain the system. Everything is now back and working fine, except one radiator that is…

TV in front of Electric Heater
Hi We have just rearranged our living room and found that to maximise space we would have to place our TV in front of our wall mounted electric heater. My question is how safe is it to turn the heater on? The TV covers about 25% of the heater and is about 7 inches away from the heater. If unsafe and is going to burn my…

Bobbly paint on new plaster
Hi, I had my flat damp proofed back in September, and 2 weeks ago primed it with a watered down cheap matt emulsion, I then painted over it with a good quality silk paint. The paint has now bobbled/blistered and can be peeled off. It appears that the salts are pushing the paint off-despite being primed. How can I rectify…

Registering a guarantee
Can any of you good people settle a query please? My friend maintains that you have to register your newly bought product with the manufacturer or the guarantee is not valid. I disagree, because this would invalidate your consumer rights, including the sale of goods act. Who is right?

Any dehumidifier recommendations?
Need to buy one to help with condensation in the bedroom - built-in wardrobes on an outside wall are making it difficult to deal with. Would a dehumidifier help solve the problem? I've been using some of those cheap throw-away ones but they are filling up very quickly so think I need something stronger. Always keep the…

Possible carbon monoxide from new gas fire
Hi I have a feeling that my gas fire bought from Argos in Feb 10 is leaking carbon monoxide. It is an open living flame type fire and it was fine up until a couple of weeks ago when the light grey coloured pebbles on it started to get stained by black soot deposits and the flames appeared to be burning more yellowy…

Ratedpeople.com
I used the rated people website to find a roofer to replace a few cracked slate tiles on my roof, he half finished the job and has left the job unfinished and my roof still leaks. I contacted ratedpeople via their website e-mail (they do not have a phone number) and sent a message. They only reply after 3 working days.…

Flue liners?
Hi all, I am hoping that some of you more experienced DIYers or people in the know will be able to help. I am trying to have a limestone hole in the wall gas fire fitted to my living room. It is untreated limestone which I know stains!! I live in a 1930's house with the original chimney!! It has been suggested that a flue…

Current gas boiler has 15cm feed
We've been told that when we replace the boiler with a new condensing boiler (which we don't want to do but our 20-year-old current boiler may be dead...) that we'll have to have all the piping from the gas meter replaced with 22cm piping. The gas piping goes under our patio/path the full width of the house, then comes…

Missing chimney breast
Hi, Have recently purchased a Victorian terraced house and the kitchen chimney breast (fairly large) has been removed, but the breast in the room immediately above it remains intact. The previous owner said that it was like this when she purchased it 4 years ago, and I suspect that the removal took place many years ago.…

Lowering ceiling
Hi Not sure this is the correct thread but here goes. Were looking in to the possibility of having our ceilings lowered to improve the heat, currently the ceilings are 12ft high (Converted old victorian property). The current ceiling is already a false ceiling created with metal stud work and platerboard, ideally in the…

blocking small stains on ceiling
I have two button sized water stains on my ceiling. I have painted several times with emulsion but the stains seem to keep coming through. I know there is a stain blocker but its a fiver and for two small stains I was wondering if there was a different solution to stop it penetrating when I pain over them?

Fencing woes
H all, I need your opinions. We had a handyman replace a large section of our fence with new concrete posts and concrete kickboards and wooden panels. We were concerned that the end panel wasn't sitting right in the post and called him back to sort it out. He said it was sorted, this was in July. Now we have discovered…
