blocking small stains on ceiling

I have two button sized water stains on my ceiling. I have painted several times with emulsion but the stains seem to keep coming through.

I know there is a stain blocker but its a fiver and for two small stains I was wondering if there was a different solution to stop it penetrating when I pain over them?

Not really-stain blocker is what is required.
Bear in mind that it won't stop water marks if the damp is still coming through-you need to remove the source of the mark first.

Paint some gloss on the marks, then emulsion over the gloss, once it has dried.

Solvent based undercoat NOT gloss. Your new emulsion won't stick to the gloss. PVA won't work either.

I've used undercoat in the past but the results weren't perfect.

Now I use Stain Stop but it is a bit expensive for a couple of small spots.

It sticks fine to mine, it has been like it for over 4 years now, stain has never returned.

Not suprised stain not returned but didn't the emulsion flash over the gloss? Whatever individual experiences (which are fine) in general terms the matt finish of undercoat gives a better visual result.

No, it is a completely invisible repair, very cheap and effective.;)
