Flue liners?

Hi all, I am hoping that some of you more experienced DIYers or people in the know will be able to help. I am trying to have a limestone hole in the wall gas fire fitted to my living room. It is untreated limestone which I know stains!! I live in a 1930's house with the original chimney!! It has been suggested that a flue liner would protect my fire from soot and dirt and prevent it from staining. Something I am very keen to do!!
1st Q: Is this true will this be the only way or could I be ok without one.
2nd Q; If I do then what would be a good price for one? I have been quoted from between £170 to £400 additional to the general fitting cost to fit a liner.
I hope you can help
Alison.
