Ants vs Borax
Hi, Reading in a few other threads Borax was recommended for killing Ant's and giving their nest a Very Bad Day[tm]. I got some today and mixed it in warm water and sugar with a 1:10 mix, 1 teaspoon of Borax to 10 teaspoons of sugar, it was nice and gluey in consistancy, and I put loads of blobs down on the Ant runs where…

Varilux Flush
We had our bathroom refurbished a year ago and the new cistern was fitted with a variable flush (1/2 for a pee, full for a !!!!). This WAS a plastic top centre hole arrangement which promptly broke last week. I bought a whole new valve of a very similar design (because I could not find anything else) but the fittings are…

Stopcock turns off water upstairs flat.
We have been fitting a kitchen in my moms flat and had to turn the water off. By turning my moms water off in her flat it also turned the water off in the flat upstairs. The stopcock is located INSIDE my moms flat. Is this normal? The flats are purpose built flats, not a converted house or the like. The flat upstairs is a…

Colour Wash for Bricks?
At the back of our house some french doors have been removed and replaced by a window with a dwarf wall below. The bricks used for this are a different colour to the rest of the house and stick out a mile! Someone told me that it's possible to buy a 'colour wash' which can be painted onto the bricks to match in but I've…

Levelling a concrete floor for the kitchen
Having read the threads on floor levelling on here i can't seem to be able to find a quick and simple (simple enough!) solution to my kitchen floor levelling problem. The kitchen floor is concrete and the deviation is from about 5-10mm on one side to about 1.5-1.75 inches on the other side. (i.e. a pretty steep slope.) I…

Urgent help required - my washing machine(s) won't work!!
I had a 3 year old machine that stopped filling up. Called out an engineer who said it was a faulty pump. As it was the second time in 3 years that this had gone, and he also said the circuit board was not working, decided not to go with the £200 repair and bought a new machine... New washing machine turned up today,…

Catching crickets
I dropped a tub of crickets a couple of nights back and quite a few escaped. I hoped the cat would sort them out as she usually comes down stairs from her day of sleeping at around 10pm and has a hunt round the living room eating the odd ones that have escaped. Today I have chirping in my living room and kitchen but I cant…

Sofa filling
I have a leather sofa which I've had for 5 years, and I have to say the foam filling at one side (the side I normally sit at :p ) is now flat as a pancake, and not terribly comfy any longer. I definitely don't want to shell out on a new sofa (I can't afford one anyway), but wondered how easy/difficult it would be to repair…

Descaling a hot water cyclinder
I live in a hard water area and from everything I've heard, my 20+ year old cylinder is likely to be clogged up with inches of calcium. Can I just drop in some descale solution to dissolve the calcium, much like you would a small kettle, but on a larger scale? I have in mind unscrewing the immersion heater element to…

Re-Mounting Electic Meter Board
Our electric meter on its mounting board is attached to the inside of our wooden porch. We are having the porch replaced by a double glazing company in just over a week, so the meter board will need to be unscrewed from the old porch wall and re-mounted on the new porch wall. Do we have to get the electric distribution…

QED-UK (part of the group, I think) purchased by someone else. All outstanding orders made before this time (unclear) are being dealt with by administrators. I'd had warnings…

bakelite light switches - safe?
Hello, we've just bought a victorian terrace that needs lots of work. As part of the refurbishment, I'd love to replace the dull modern square white light switches with old bakelite light switches... But are they safe? Will they pass building regs etc? If not, is there any way of refurbishing them to make them acceptable?
