dirty rubber seal in washing machine
Has anyone had the rubber seal on the inside of the washing machine go stained, dirty and disgusting? I have had machines now for 25 yrs and this has never happened. I wipe round the rubber, lots of slime and have tried scrubbing it clean with cream cleaner etc, but useless and am now thinking of having it replaced. I have…

Critter in the loft - POO SIZES?
I have "something" in my loft. I can hear it running around all night, but every time I go up there, nothing. There's no droppings of any kind around and as far as I can tell, no damage, but it's driving me nuts. What can I do to find out what it is and then how do I get rid (in a humane way-preferrably) I know you know…

Washing machine 'rust'? marks
Over the past few months the washing machine has started leaving red/rusty coloured marks on clothes. I have tried to read up on this and it could be due to the water heater, as it is generally only used on 30/40c washes, or the bearings??? The machine is a Bendix and is just over 3 years old, is it likely that…

Patching walls
[rambling preamble]The electricians have now departed following a complete rewire and we're now going to attempt to put the house back together. There's a lot of filling to do where old fittings have been removed. Some deep holes, they've done some themselves but to be honest it looks like they've stood across the room and…

Moving Electricity meter
I have the upstairs half of a converted semi and obviously to save money the freeholder left my electricity meter below the stairs in the lower flat. Inconvenient. Presumably my energy suppliers are the only ones authorised to move it and they want £100 just to come and estimate resiting it to the other side of the stairs.…

Help - New Iron!
Hi My Tefal Cordless Iron blew up yesterday (unfortunately it waited until I was ironing the last item!) and looking at Argos/Kelkoo, etc no-one seems to make cordless irons any more. Most of the ones available are the steam generator irons which appear to cost anything between £50 and £250. Are these as good as they are…

Renewing/re-routing mains water supply
I will soon be moving house and need to "DIY" several jobs, so any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated...:D The mains water supply seems to come into the bathroom (it's a bungalow) in lead pipe from the street. I intend to relocate the kitchen, and therefore the water supply to it. Any ideas on the best…

Advice on dealing with TV malfunction purchased from Selfridges
Does anyone know anything about Selfridges warranty on Audio & Video equipment? I've got a month left on my TVs warranty and this is the second time it's broken down in 2 years. Do you think it will be upgraded to a newer model if it's irreparable (an electrician friend of mine thinks this may be the case), a refund of the…

Washing Machine is broken
My washing machine packed in yesterday, its not filling up much and seems to just drain and spin etc but then jump to the end of the cycle in about 10 minutes. Its about 4 years old and I think its come to the end of its life. I can't afford to take the risk of calling an engineer so i think its time to buy a new one.…

Using shower pump to boost bath pressure
I have installed a new bath recently withthe typ of tap which can be installed anywhere with the filler spout separately. I have a gavity fed system but the pressure is very low. The bath plumbing is 22mm pipe and I reduced it to 15mm to connect to the taps, this shouldn't make any diference as the connection between the…

All-in-one Power Showers
The ones where the pump is integral - are they a good thing or a bad thing? Is it better to get one with a separate pump? (we dont have a combi-boiler, btw) Hubby is worried that being gravity-fed is going to be a problem as the shower is higher than the hot water tank.

I need a shower!
I've recently fitted shower mixer taps on my bath - surprised myself actually as I had visions of having to call a plumber if I messed it up! Anyway, problem is it seems my hot water pressure is so low that it's practically useless as a shower - the cold water comes out of the shower fine but hot doesn't want to know! The…
