removing external render - possible?
We are planning to buy a property - a Victorian terraced house that has been ruined with an Artex-like external render. This has not only made the house ugly but has also blocked up the damp-proof course and made the basement rooms damp. We are wondering what could be done to remove the render, or at the very least to…

Cost of laying a new carpet?
Could anyone give me a rough estimate of how much it would cost to lay a carpet in a room approx 4m x 6m please? Also, would the cost be considerably cheaper if the underlay and gripper rods are already in place, so it's just a case of laying and fitting the actual carpet? Cheers :)

I want to get someone to come and recarpet the whole thing. I want to know will it make much difference to the price if I remove the old carpet myself? I know…

Loft condensation
Hi. After a few months of not going into the loft we went in to get the baby bath down (for the new one) and noticed a lot of condensation in the loft. This has only really started since we had loft insulation put in and there are black spots all over the ply used to board out the loft over the insulation. Any suggestions…

Woodworm
I was preparing to lay my laminate flooring today, when I looked the floor boards. The joists are riddled with the dreaded worm. I prodded the joists, but the are sound - also there is no sign of dust around any holes, which I would think is an indication of fresh activity. The carpet I pulled up looked like it had been…

Iron not working correctly
A year or two ago, I bought a lovely iron for around £50, it's great except lately it doesn't blast the steam out like it used to. I wondered if you'd experienced this... Do you think the iron needs descaling or something? If so, do you know how I might do this? Any tips or tricks? Hope to hear from you kind regards Alex

Wooden blinds - shop bought or custom made?
A friend has wooden blinds which were bought in a retail shop and look excellent and much cheaper than custom made ones would have been. They are too long though and there is a pile of slats resting on the windowsill which sort of detracts from the overall slimline appearance. She is unsure whether these extra unwanted…

Laminate flooring - how to do edges under skirting
To lay laminate when the skirting board is removed and replaced after the job is done requires a gap to be kept around the edges for movement I believe. Would this gap need to be filled with the cork edging that is on the market or with spacers? Apart from a hearth [what would i do around that?] - the room is a simple…
