Cheapest provider?
We currently have our gas with British Gas and our electric through N Power, but I'd love to swop as the prices we pay at present are ridiculous! Unfortunately, our electric is on a pre-pay meter due to the bad credit that the previous tenants ran up on the property. We've tried getting N Power to switch us to a normal pay…

Electricity / Gas Daily Usage
Hi everyone, I am trying to be more savvy with money at the moment, and thought it would be interesting to see how much we are actually spending on electricity... I recently switched from Southern Electric to EON after receiving horrendously high bills from Southern Electric, and so far am unable to view a bill online for…

npower and canceling your account when you move out
Hey I have had loads of problems trying to close a gas account. However if you use consumer driect to ensure you can close the account then you do get results. I had problems with npower refusing to close my gas account even thou I moved out and paid the balance. My advice is contact consumer direct as within 3 days I got…

Switching from a capped tarrif
My capped rate expires at the end of August, The info on MSE says to switch within the last 6 weeks on your capped contract. I'm a little concerned though because they'll ask for my meter readings when I switch and surely if I put in todays meter readings the switch would be effective from today? Can anyone shed some light…

BG keep telling my Dad - sorry hes leaving
Three times this has happened now. Out of the blue he gets a letter from British Gas saying they're sorry hes leaving. Every time he phones them up and says hes not and has never signed with anyone else. Each time they tell him hes moving to Southern Electric. They then send him a letter saying welcome to British Gas and…

New flat
Hi me and my friend are moving into a new flat on Saturday which will be our first proper one, dealing with bills etc. As Martin is always saying about switching elec suppliers for the best deal etc how would we go about doing this. We are not sure yet who we are with with our electric (there is no gas). Is it worth…

Competition, Grants & Insulation
We're trying to organise ourselves for loft & cavity wall insulation using as much in the way of grants as possible. As usual we're trying to make sure we get the best deal. We're not on benefits & the best we might get is that I'm 64 so there might be some grant money there. However I'm mystified as to the way the schemes…

Just had a visit from a British Gas Rep
was with us for over half an hour trying to convince us to move dual fuel to them from Suthern Electric - she did some calcs and said they would be cheaper because: The first 1143KWh of units from SE are charged at a higher rate per quarter before going on to the lower rate. With BG the higher rate applies to the first…

Sky Box consumption
Using my ecoeye energy monitor one day I decided to check out just how much it does use. Its the Sky + Box in white, cant see the manufacturer and cant get to the back to look. I found that while the box is on it uses 25w an hour, whether recording or not. On standby (red light) it uses 20w an hour, a piddly 5w reduction.…

How long is a 'quarter' ?
I've been analysing my Scottish Power electricity bills for the past 30 months, mainly so I have all the facts to hand when/if I need to switch. I've been on their guaranteed fixed price 2010 package since January 2007. Scottish Power's idea of a 'quarter' seems to be anything between 80 and 94 days duration. The last time…

Meter change c*ck up. What to do now?
Hi, About 10 months ago we trasferred our gas and elec to a fixed rate tariff with Eon. Four months after joining our electricity meter was changed for a new one. Unfortunately, whoever changed the meter messed up and recorded the wrong readings for both meters. (Luckily I kept a record) Now, due to this mistake Eon tried…

They have been charging me on the wrong meter for the past 3 years. Having checked out both meters that are in dispute. I have realised that ours has clocked…

Profits up 80% at British Gas
Well it seems those price hikes last year were not to counter rising wholesale prices but more importantly to line the pockets of those at BG. Makes their 10% cuts in prices laughable, surely bigger cuts on the way. Full article http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/jul/30/british-gas-centrica-profits-rise Profits rise…
