Competition, Grants & Insulation

We're trying to organise ourselves for loft & cavity wall insulation using as much in the way of grants as possible. As usual we're trying to make sure we get the best deal. We're not on benefits & the best we might get is that I'm 64 so there might be some grant money there. However I'm mystified as to the way the schemes work. There seem to be multiple organisations offering similar deals. Is there any difference in cost? How can we be sure we're getting the best possible deal? How come it's so hard to get people round & they seem to take so long!
Anyone with any real understanding as to the way it all works - we'd love to hear from you!

I tried to get cavity wall insulation for my semi from EDF a few years ago. They were going to do it for nothing until the surveyer saw my house.

Can't do it because I have a garage at the side it would need scaffolding which I would have to arrange and pay for it. I changed my fuel to Eon and gave them a call.

Same story, health and bloody safety. I gave up after that.
