Kleenex Mansized
I know that Kleenex dropped the branding "Mansized" because it was considered to be sexist. I am more concerned about the quality of the product: did it used to be far stronger in years gone by? I now prefer the thinner kitchen roll over Kleenex. I also avoid the various impregnated tissues. Does anyone else feel that…

How much to live on
How much do you expect you will require to live on each month when you are retired? ie no mortgage, no commute to work BUT maybe higher heating, hobby costs. I'm getting to the stage where I'm realising that I don't need to be super rich to retire and will only really require living costs but I don't know how much I should…

Living it up by the sea
Thought I would start my own thread as I regularly read others on this site. Myself and my husband moved to Lincolnshire after he was forced to take retirement due to ill health 13 years ago. Started looking for a property with more land in a nice area and ended up here! Since moving to Lincolnshire, we have moved another…

Away From The Madding Crowd
Hello and welcome to my little part of this wonderful MSE
community. For almost 10 years I have read
the contents of various forums seeking advice and inspiration regarding a
multitude of subjects. The help and
knowledge that I have gained cannot be underestimated and there are literally
too many people to thank…

Over 50? how do you keep fit?
I've been a bit poorly of late. Usual school bugs. It got me thinking how do others keep fit? Me? Usually cycling all year round. Done well over 20,000 miles since lockdown. I'm not as supple as I was though so probably need to do some work on flexibility. What about you?

More WIRE than FIRE, simplifying, saving and savvy spending
HI :) I've been around the boards for years - I learn so much from other MSE-ers and find having a diary truly helps me keep track of what I'm doing £££-wise! However, I neglected my last diary and life has moved on since then, so it seems sensible to start over. My overall goal has been to retire early (FIRE - Financial…

How do you track your finances?
Recently, I've been playing around with various different means of tracking my expenditure, my pension planning etc. I tend to use three main methods. My go to, is my own spreadsheet, with all planned expenditure, every investment etc. The downside is it's quite a manual procedure and it's easy to make a mistake. It also…

Reducing savings to avoid paying for care.
My Mother is currently housebound and has 2 carers 4 times a day. This is rapidly reducing her savings. I understand that she can’t give her savings away or suddenly by cars or jewellery etc, and the council will see this as fraud. However her kitchen and bathroom have not been updated in many years and now need…

Make do and mend
A few events this week have made me think about my approach and indeed society's approach to repairing or replacing things. Firstly, a student at my school broke their phone screen and was going to bin their phone until I suggested a screen replacement. Secondly, the storm saw a patio heater break, but the spare part is…

Eye test due - new glasses recommendations.
I have an eye test due soon. My prescription is pretty high (over -6 in both eyes) plus I need varifocals. So I really need high index lenses. Is anyone aware of any opticians other than Asda who offer these at no extra cost? Last time I got two pairs for £120, cheaper than a single pair of lenses in some places. I've just…

Over 50? What’s one small money saving habit that’s made a real difference?
De lurk. First time post :) I’m turning 50 this year and focused on making my money go further. I’d love to hear from others in the same boat. What’s one money saving habit you’ve picked up after 50 that’s made a difference?

60+ oystercard application problems
I am less than 2 weeks from my 60th birthday and have set up a photocard account. However, it does not give me an option of applying for a 60+ card, only for a student or apprentice card. I called TFL but they didn't answer and I wasn't even allowed to join a queue to talk to someone. Has anyone else had this problem?

Land Registry Labyrinth (help needed: on a budget)
Hi Wondering if anyone can help me with the Land Registry labyrinth? Although I’ve been divorced for 14 years, I’ve just
discovered that my ex-husband’s name is still on the Title deeds! Stunned isn’t the word. As part of the divorce proceedings, in 2011, there was a
court order stating that my ex must give up his legal…

sky TV age discrimination?
Hi all My Mum is 85 and partially sighted, but other than that she is fit and well, and fully capable of managing her own affairs. Sky charge her £1.75 a month to have paper bill and recently when her monthly charge was bumped up by £12 a month, when she phoned them to discuss this they said she cannot have any offers they…

New Tax Year......ISAs on the move!
Well it's the start of a new tax year. Time to move savings into a new ISA. But also time to start looking at transferring ISAs. I'll be switching out of Plum to get a better rate and also because I didn't like the way they changed the payment of interest so it didn't land in my account until 30 days after it was…

Council tax increasing over 5%
Hi, We've just had our council tax bill for 2025/26 and found that it is increasing by 5.2% overall, despite Wolverhampton council declaring 4.99%. They seem to have done this by increasing the City council part by 4.99%, but then 6.6% and 6.5% respectively for Fire & civil Defence and Police. Is this allowed, as it seems…

Notification of responses to Forum posts
Is there a way in the forum settings so that a notification is sent to my email when someone makes a comment on my query? That way I, and all forum users, would not have to check the forum every day to see if anybody can help. I chose over 50s for thread but applies to all ages. Maybe a simple "General" in start of new…

Care Home, Financial Assessment and reasonability?
Myself and my Brother have POA for my mother who suffered a massive stroke a few years ago. The only thing to leave my mother's bank accounts for the last three years is the fees for the care home. Her bank statements only have the homes direct debits for the home costs. (No bills, no other transactions) It is now getting…
