  • I have tried to make calls to the US using 1899 but every time the operator says that the number is not recognised. I have e-mailed 1899 numerous times but so far have failed to get the problem sorted out. Also I have asked them to clarify the cost of calls to the US as their web page clearly states calls are .05p/per min but announcement at begining of call says 1p/per min. Their reply was calls are 1p/per min but they are continuing to advertise at .05p/per min.

AFAICS, their website lists the price for calls to the USA as 1p/minute from both BT and cable landlines.
Their - possessive pronoun (owned by them e.g. "They locked their car").
    They're - colloquial/abbreviated version of 'They are'
There - noun (location other than here e.g. "You can buy groceries there") OR adverb (in or at that place e.g. "They have lived there for years") OR adverb (to or towards that place e.g. "Go there at noon") OR adverb (in that matter e.g. " I agree with you there").

Slight spin on this. I'm now working in Dublin for a few months. Having been hammered by Vodafone for roaming, I'm wondering what the cheapest way of calling UK & Europe is from Ireland. Don;t want to take out a new contract, but would consider a new Pre-pay SIM.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks
  • I have made several attempts this week and last to call via the low call providers listed in the Calls Checker eg:

    Dialwise 1p/min
    (08448614848)
    Abroadtel 1p/min
    (08447210001)
    Telestunt 2p/min
    (08444628787)
    DialAround 2p/min
    (08444625050)
    Ratebuster 3p/min
    (08445949494)
    CheapestCalls 3p/min
    (08444391414)
    Telediscount 4p/min
    (08444286868)

I have tried all of the above and several others over and over and have not been connected even once. I have a Bulldog line (unfortunately) recently changed from a BT one. I have never had any problems getting through to these numbers when I had a BT line.

I can only assume Bulldog is blocking access to these numbers so that you are forced to call direct and pay Bulldog telecom rates (which are much higher).
    Is this legal?

Its probably in your T&C's, only BT are obliged to allow you to use another carrier for your calls ;)

The other possibility is that Bulldog havent got round to opening up access to these numbers.Do they allow you to phone say a normal one.
Eg 08448 376 321 (Speaking Clock) 2p a minute.Or are they barring all of them, not just cheap call providers. If they are you need to speak to there CS and see when they are going to allow access.

  • Yesterday I used 1899 to call the US for 1ppm.
The first time I tried there was a time lag in the conversation and I was very crackly. I put the call down then redialled and the following call was fine. Very clear with no lag.
...and then the window licker said to me...

cheapest way to call from Ireland would be to use Telestunt or Cheapcalls dialthrough numbers from ordinary landline - calls to UK (and most of western europe) would cost same as local call (so you can use your work telephone and noone would give a d*** - its would be just local call rate on your bill)
You can compare their rates even in one page at http://www.internationalcheapcalls.com/ireland/ - enjoy

doesnt worth to by local sim - costs would be still big..
    :hello:
