Am a bit confused as to how much I will be charged fby BT for using the simply dial providers, such as telestunt, after reading the article about "say no to 0870 numbers" Will I be charged just the one off connection fee, or will it depend how long my call lasts?
Sorry if this is a silly question!

No such thing as a silly question.

If say you are ringing a 0844 1p a minute number from your BT landline you will be charged 1p a minute,a 2p a minute no,your charged 2p a minute.and so on.There are no connection fees with these numbers. However as they are dial through numbers, you start paying as soon as you connect to them.Which means if the number you are calling is unobtainable or engaged your still charged the min call charge by BT.

What countries are you ringing from your Landline? there could be cheaper alternatives.

BT do not charge a connection fee BUT do charge a 5p minimum call charge - so, if the call reaches an answering machine and you hang up immediately, you will be charged 5p.
Their - possessive pronoun (owned by them e.g. "They locked their car").
    They're - colloquial/abbreviated version of 'They are'
There - noun (location other than here e.g. "You can buy groceries there") OR adverb (in or at that place e.g. "They have lived there for years") OR adverb (to or towards that place e.g. "Go there at noon") OR adverb (in that matter e.g. " I agree with you there").

  • Putting United Arab Emirates into the checker shows Just-dial as cheapest, at national rate. Checking their website shows that for UAE they use a premium rate number that is charged at 15p/minute.

Good spot! Your post caught my Eye as I call the UAE quite frequently. Fortunately, I now use 18185 (and before that was available 1899)!

  • I have just read the article with regards to calling overseas from a UK landline. My girlfriend lives in Sweden and my phone bills have not been something i want to comment on....so this seems to good to be true!

The call checker suggests i call special access number for Ratebuster. If i call this and then dial my girlfriends number, i understand that i will only get charged 1p per min. Is this for real?

And, how do i get billed for this charge? I am currently with Talk Talk, who i pay a monthly direct debit. I don't understand how another provider will get paid for my calls to Sweden...........

Please can someone make this clearer for me - it could save me a fortune! ;)

    Thanks

I assume you mean TalkTalk is your CPS provider. I hope you're not paying them any monthly fee (if you are, downgrade to Talk Talk 1 a.s.a.p.).

In any case, their rate to Swedish landlines appears to be 5p/minute at all times.

Dial 1280 to hop back onto BT* before dialling Ratebuster's 0844 number and the call will then cost you 1p/minute - subject to BT's minimum call charge of 5p - and the cost will appear on your BT bill.

    * Talk Talk's website does not appear to detail their charges for calls to 0844 numbers so doing this is the safest way.
