my son 12yrs makes his in microwave too,
twice as much milk as oats, he says that the value oats taste just as good as any other and he usually has honey on top, he likes to experiment too, sometimes he stirs in chocolate buttons icon10.gif

My husband makes it every morning for breakfast. He uses one teacup of Tescos Value oats and a cup and half of water and then cooks it on the hob.

He likes it. I have told him to use milk or half and half but he does not. Men.

Thanks for the replies.. looks like tesco value oats are going on the shopping list... love it when a value product is popular.
  • Ah - the great porridge/porage trail

Half a cup of the above with one cup of water, microwave on high for 2 mins
Add honey to sweeten and you have a very healthy dish - no dairy products to feed cholesterol, honey to support immune system, and bulky ingredients guarantee a good throughput

Having gone through every brand, price range, supermarket there my research shows no relationship between taste and price/brand/supermarket, so I'm on the cheapest I can find from the shop I happen to be in when I need to restock

One bowl a day will ensure a happy colon and two bowls a day will help to lower cholesterol. Do I like it? No, I damn well don't so have to think it as medicine ;)

    Hi all :)

There's an earlier thread on porridge making full of good wholesome stuff, as you'd expect :), and so I've just merged the two together for you.

Posts are listed in date order so you'll need to read from the beginning again to catch up. :)

I like to sprinkle horlicks powder (yes the night time drink!!) over my porridge, and then a little sprinkle of sugar. I also make it with half semi skimmed milk, half water.

If you really cannot be bothered to cook, porridge oats are quite nice on their own with *cold* milk. I don't even have sugar - seems quite sweet enough to me.

I use the cheapie oats for this, the old style rolled oats are a bit chewy, and oatmeal would be a no-no too.

  • I really can't tell the difference between the value oats and the more expensive types, so usually buy Asda Smartprice - about 47p for 1kg, which lasts ages. Recommended portion is about 30-50g, so that's a lot of breakfasts - so much cheaper than other cereals or "ready" porridge type things.

I make mine in the microwave - 2 mins on high, then stir, then 30 seconds seems to stop overflowing problems, using about half and half skimmed milk and water, and then stir in some honey when it's cooked.

    I'm definitely an all-year-round porridge-eater - am totally addicted!

I did come across someone a while ago who stirred Marmite into hers. Love marmite but just can't bring myself to do that to porridge - yeugh!

A lot of people seem to use water as well as milk??

I use skimmed milk. By adding water too wouldn't it be tasteless?
