My favourite porridge is the wholegrain type - distinguishable by the size of the flakes as they are bigger. It's a bit less processed than the other stuff therefore more fibre, though it's also more expensive. Sainsbury's do it in the Be Good To Yourself range. Think a 500g bag is 69p.
I am terribly lazy and eat it raw. Just add milk from the fridge, and put in some nuts, sultanas, sunflower seeds or other chopped up fruit - turns it into museli. I've heard of people not using milk but fruit juice, though haven't tried this myself.
If I ever have it cooked then as per other posters I would have it one cup of porridge, one cup of water and one cup milk, and then gently heat it on the hob, stirring all the time until it's nice and sticky. Serve with v.cold milk and crunchy sugar. Yum!0 -
Quaker oats made in the microwave with full cream milk (twice as much milk as oats). After cooking I add tbs honey and assorteddried fruits. Delicious.ANGER is one letter away from DANGER0

I use the tesco value oats - and usually use all milk [but if we are running short on milk use half and half]
I then mix a blob of golden syrup in it and tell my eldest it is the Oat so Simple stuff
made it for the babes with all water yesterday cos the kids have been throwing up and i think milk has been affecting their tummies - wasn't as creamy but was still ok - and they enjoyed it tooseems to have helped them get their appetites back too!
:rotfl:five children? I must be mad........ :rotfl:

I'm a Tesco value porridge oats person
1 part oats to 2 parts milk (I used skimmed but s/skimmed for the boys) but I also add sultanas. I cook it for 3 mins in the microwave, stir then add sultanas and another 30 secs. I don't need to add sugar as the sultanas sweeten it and then I usually add tinned prunes to the top. I have also added pureed fruit too.
You don't have to cook the oats this long - it's personal preference. Some posters cook for less time but my mum cooks hers for longer.0 -
I have heard about cooking it in the slow cooker overnight (obviously if there are going to be enough of you eating it). Does anyone here know about that? Is it the same proportions of milk/water and oats and leave it on low?Quidco cashback paid out so far £745.89 :j0

You get a better consistancy if you let the oats soak in the milk for 10/15 mins before cooking in microwave. I do this first thing when I get up, get showered and its ready to cook.Humans only use around forty percent of their brains capacity. Imagine what we could achieve if we used the other seventy percent!0

I use proper oatmeal, no rolled oats of any kind, they have a much better flavour & texture, you don't get that 'wallpaper-paste' effect ... half medium & half pinhead, cook for 10 minutes, or soak overnight & cook for 5, delicious0

I use Waitrose own brand oats (tried others including Tesco and Sainsburys but they just didn't taste as nice) and full cream milk. We do it in a pan on the hob as I kept on having it overflow in the microwave as we didn't have a bowl big enough + I think it makes a nicer consistency.0
