My OH makes great porridge with value oats and water, I don't add any sugar it's sweet enough without for me. It makes a great breakfast because you feel full and warm, stops me getting the munchies mid morning.

I have put 4 cups of oats, 6 cups of skimmed milk and 2 cups of water in the slow cooker and turned it on low at 10pm. DH will get up at 6am, so he will have first go at it. I will let you know how it goes.

If you really cannot be bothered to cook, porridge oats are quite nice on their own with *cold* milk. I don't even have sugar - seems quite sweet enough to me.

I use the cheapie oats for this, the old style rolled oats are a bit chewy, and oatmeal would be a no-no too.
I do much the same but I prefer the large Jumbo oats this way. I also add two tablespoons of ground Flaxseeds
as these contains loads of omega 3 and soluble fibre and lignans so improve the nutrient value no end. Adding fresh or stewed fruit would be a lot better for you than just adding sugar which is basically nutritionally empty calories.

When hubby got up at 6am he was able to get a bowlfull out of the middle, but the edge was burnt. By the time I got up, it was a funny colour and it was welded to the pot. Result - failure. But it was worth a try.

Suewre, have you got a microwave- it is easy to do it in there. For one person 1/2 cup of porridge to 1 cupmilk or water. Easy and less messy.

I had porridge today with no salt, sugar or milk.....

Instead I had about 5 prunes and the juice from the tin - it was absolutely sublime! The nicest porridge I have had and I would heartily recommend trying it.

I like Scotts old fashioned porridge 'cos it has more texture - I don't like the smooth stuff.
I was on a low GI diet last year & started to cook it with a heaped teaspoon of cinnamon, artificial sweetener & a small handful of raisins. Half skimmed milk & half water, into the microwave for 3 mins & it's fabulous. It makes the kitchen smell great too!

thanks to this thread, my 2 teenagers now make microwave porridge at least twice a day, instead of filling up on expensive packet cereals and crisps. Certainly helped the weekly shopping budget too.
  • Me and my DD love porridge we like it best with golden syrup have way through the cooking I stir in the syrup and leave it to cook for a few more mins its lovely.( very hungry now)
