I've used water to cook my oats for ages now - it's not gruel if you don't add so much water or ad some more oats. Start with little water and add some more if it goes too thick.
Today I've had oats with a tiny touch of maple syrup, a banana and a small handful of sunflower seeds added. :j0 -
I had porridge yesterday made with water ( I popped in a sweetner as well cos I'm a big baby!) and it was fine. I shoved it in the micro and kept adding more water when it got too thick. For saying there was no milk in it it tasted surprisingly creamy.Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0

I used to hate the stuff but forced myself to eat it, now have it every morning with a teaspoon of VANILLA EXTRACT mmmmm its divine and much better than sugar. Bought Lidls porridge oats today, 25p.
Also nice made with coconut milk which is just 39p a tin in aldi at the mo.(bought 24 tins!!)You can if you think you can!0 -
I'm going to have mine with vanilla tomorrow, I'd never have thought of that. This morning I made it with cinnamon, sweetener & a chopped pear. No milk just water & in the microwave. It was very good. For something so simple this thread shows that porridge is amazingly versatile.
I think it's something you either love or hate though, my husband thinks it's disgusting stuff!0 -
I think how you like your porridge is largely down to your childhood experience of it, good or bad
I was brought up on traditional Scots porridge made with real oatmeal, no rolled oats, not even the wholefood shop kind. the best I ever had was the coarse stuff my grandfather used to cook up over an open fire, in a pot like a witches cauldron, to feed his working dogs
I love porridge so much so that I often have it as a meal, & during all 3 of my pregnancies I craved it & ate 3 bowls a day!
so this is how I feel about porridge ...
oatmeal cooked with water + salt, served with cold milk = heaven
rolled oats of any kind cooked with water and/or milk = barely edible wallpaper paste
porridge of any kind + anything sweet = pudding, & nasty pudding at that
& Ready Brek makes me heave
I imagine just about all of you feel exactly the opposite0 -
I agree about oatmeal - definitely the best by far! I like the Alford oatmeal, which is stone ground and kiln dried, and difficult to come by unless you have a Waitrose handy.
Rolled oats - are fine with cold milk (not cooked), and maybe a little fruit added.

I agree, the oatmeal of Alford is excellent - have seen it in Tesco and the Lakeland kitchenware shops sell it too. Nice 'nutty' flavour and texture - I had a bowlful the other morning (made with water and stirred in some honey just before eating); straight afterwards I had a bowl of Scotts 'Oats so easy' made with milk and again a bit of honey - there was no comparison : the Oatmeal was much nicer even though I thought I preferred porridge made with milk. I do sometimes add a splash of milk to the Oatmeal when it's cooked though. And the packet instructions say something like 40g oatmeal to 300ml water - I found this far to runny and would suggest 60 or 65 grams of Oatmeal to 300ml of water (this makes a smallish portion for 1, so double it to 130g oatmeal and 600ml water for a nice big bowl)yum!

the Alford oatmeal is delicious stuff & it's good to know, Whitefiver & competitionscafe, that I'm not alone in preferring the real thing

I have it cold with 1/2 fat milk and honey. My son has it full fat milk and organic baby cereal. Lovely :0)
